Dunaden has given France its second successive winner in the Melbourne Cup, beating England's Red Cadeaux by the barest margin in the $6.2 million race.

After the closest finish in the 151-year history of the race, German horse Lucas Cranach completed an international sweep of the placings.

Dunaden's jockey Christophe Lemaire, who arrived in Australia 24 hours before the race after Craig Williams lost an appeal to keep the ride, shed tears when judges gave him the verdict.

Japanese owned Delta Blues ridden by Iwata Yasunari wins the 2006 Melbourne Cup. Trainer Katsuhiko Sumii also achieved the Quinella with stablemate Pop Rock, ridden by Damien Oliver, placing second in the race.

Maybe Better came in at third, with Zipping posting a fourth place finish. Pre-race favourite Yeates missed the start, finishing seventh.

2005 Melbourne Cup Replay

Makybe Diva wins the 2005 Melbourne Cup, becoming the first three-time winner of Australia's richest horse race. Owner, tuna fisherman Tony Santic, said the mare will now retire.

Trained by Lee Freedman and ridden by Glen Boss, the seven-year-old hit the front with 200 meters to go and held off a late run from On A Jeune to win by a length. Xcellent was a further half-length back in third place.
