Melbourne Cup Trophy
The value of the trophies are as follows:
The winning owner receives a trophy worth $150,000, the trainer and jockey $10,000 each, and the strapper $5,000.
The Melbourne Cup trophy nicknamed the 'Loving Cup' because of it's hand-made design, is awarded the winning horse’s owner and contains 18-carat gold.
A new trophy is crafted each year, and a second identical trophy is also present should the race ever end in a dead-heat, with last year's photo finish between Dunaden and Red Cadeaux a reminder.
The winner’s trainer and jockey are each awarded a miniature version of the trophy, and the strapper receives the Tommy Woodcock, which is named on behalf of Phar Lap’s attendant.
Australia Racing verse the World
When comparing total racing prize-money, Australia is surpassed only by the United States and Japan. Which is quite remarkable when considering the population and Gross Domestic Product of these much larger countries.
Given these facts it’s clear why the Melbourne Cup, as well as other rich Australian Group One events, has become an increasingly attractive destination for the international racing community. This year the main horses in the market are were internationally born.
