Melbourne Cup Field

Below are the 24 horses who made the final field along with their assigned barrier draws. Some weights were changed for horses that won a qualifying event, such as Caulfield Cup winner Dunaden.

The field was determined on Sunday, the 4th of November 2012, and was subject to a horse's continued good health and other factors. One significant change involved the galloper Kelinni, who won the Lexus Stakes.

The victory earned Kelinni a chance to contest the 2012 Cup, and his connections took advantage. The Chris Waller trained stayer was no stranger to success, having recently placed in the Metropolitan Handicap.

Horse Reviews and guide to helping find Next Year's Winner!

When studying the final field there were several 2012 Melbourne Cup horses that could have made history, and two performances that did!

For example Dunaden who won last year's Cup while carrying 54.5kgs, tried to lug 59kgs across the line. Had the Nicobar stallion won, he would've carried the highest weight to victory since Rain Lover's 60.5kgs (1969).

With a victory Dunaden would have also become the first galloper to win back-to-back Melbourne Cups since the mighty Makybe Diva, who won three straight (2003-2005).

Another who tried to etch his name in Melbourne Cup lore is Americain. Had Americain saluted he would've become only the second horse in history to win in non-consecutive years, matching Peter Pan (1930/32).

While Dunaden, Americain, Viola Ici, Niwot and Winchester tried to become the first eight year-old's to win the Melbourne Cup since Catalogue (1938).

A victory by Unusual Suspect would have been even more remarkable, since no nine year-old has ever won, and none has ever claimed the trophy after placing no better than fifth in it's previous five starts.

Not to be over-looked was Red Cadeaux, because with a victory he would've become the first galloper since Empire Rose (1988) to score the Melbourne Cup after placing the year before.

Red Cadeaux also faced a well known Melbourne Cup barrier obstacle, having drawn number eighteen. In the Great Race's history no horse jumping from barrier eighteen had ever won the Cup.

On the opposite end was Galileo's Choice, as he drew the luckiest barrier in the event's history, number eleven which had seen seven winners.

There's also Mount Athos, an Irish bred horse with a Greek name and Italian trainer who was quite fancied even though he'd never raced in Australia. Only Vintage Crop (1993) has won at his first Aussie start.

Regarding Ireland, no Irish stayer had ever won the Melbourne Cup, a trend that had a good chance of ending with the likes of Green Moon, Mount Athos, Fiorente, Kelinni, Jakkalberry and five other starters.

A fact Green Moon erased from the books along with helping achieve another record, the first time in history the top four finishers were all bred in the same country (IRE) not named Australia.

The Galileo stallion My Quest For Peace had a chance to become the first horse since Delta Blues (2006), to turn a Caulfield Cup defeat into a Melbourne Cup victory.

While Maluckyday who placed second in the Cup just two years ago, could have joined an elite list of gallopers that won the event after failing in their first Melbourne Cup appearance.

For example the horse Dunaden used the Geelong Cup as his first-ever Australian start and Melbourne Cup lead-up, following the same path as the previous year's winner Americain. But the similarities don't stop there, he carried the same weight (58kgs) as Americain to his Geelong win.

Fresh off this momentum Dunaden entered the Melbourne Cup as one of the top five favourites, much like Americain the year before. The Nicobar stallion was also assigned the identical weight (54.5kgs) his french trained rival carried to victory in 2010.

After claiming the Cup Dunaden's next race was in Hong Kong, where ridden by Craig Williams the stayer became the first horse to win the Hong Kong Vase-Melbourne Cup double.

As for for the Dynaformer stallion Americain, his next start took place in the Sandown Cassic on Saturday the 12th of November where he defeated Melbourne Cup fifth place finisher Manighar.

While Cup runner-up Red Cadeaux had his next race in Hong Kong where he finished third to Dunaden, thus extending his Group place-rate.
