The Adelaide Autumn Carnival is the annual highlight of horse racing in South Australia. The carnival begins in March, but the Group 1 racing doesn't kick off until late April, with the Australasian Oaks and Robert Sangster Stakes day.
While there is some overlap between the Adelaide Autumn Carnival and the Sydney Autumn Carnival, the quality Group 1s in Adelaide only occur once the Sydney racing extravaganza has concluded.
The Goodwood is the most lucrative Group 1 of the Adelaide Autumn offering $750k in prize money.
The Carnival concludes with Goodwood Day, which along with the Group 1 Goodwood boasts four Group three races.
Please note the Adelaide Autumn Carnival has been seriously revamped in 2024. Details of the changes can be found at - Adelaide racing carnival revamped to make it sole major focus for Australian punters.
Adelaide Autumn Carnival History
The Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival is one of the highlights of the South Australian racing calendar, featuring four Group 1 races and a range of other exciting events.
The carnival dates back to the late 1800s, when the South Australian Jockey Club was formed and began to host races at Morphettville.
First run in 1860, the South Australian Derby, a 2500m race for three-year-olds, is the oldest of the carnival's Group 1 races.
The race has been won by some of the greats of Australian racing, such as Phar Lap, Tulloch and Dulcify. The derby is held on the second Saturday of the carnival.
Following on from the SA Derby, The Goodwood was first run in 1881. A 1200m sprint open to all horses, The Goodwood is the most prestigious and lucrative race of the carnival, with a prize money of $600,000. The race has been won by champions such as Black Caviar, Takeover Target and Santa Ana Lane and is a feature event on the final Saturday of the carnival.
Meanwhile, the first Australasian Oaks, a 2000m race for three-year-old fillies, was run in 1982 and won by Rose Of Kingston.
The Robert Sangster Stakes, a 1200m sprint for fillies and mares, followed a year later in 1983 and was won by Ranee's Palace, with these two races now forming a Group 1 double on the first Saturday of the carnival.
Outside of the Group 1 races, the carnival also includes notable races like the Group 2 Adelaide Cup Adelaide Cup, a 3200m handicap for stayers now held on the second Monday of March.
First run in 1864 at Thebarton Racecourse, the Adelaide Cup was worth 500 sovereigns, plus a 50-sovereign sweep to attract owners from other colonies and was won by Falcon carrying 64kg.
From 1864 to 1868, the race was a Weight for Age event over two miles before the Autumn meeting moved to Victoria Park Racecourse, where it became a handicap race over two miles.
Over the next few years, the race changed venues between Morphettville and Victoria Park several times, was cancelled on five occasions and was even run at Melbourne's Flemington racecourse on one occasion in 1885.
But from 1889, it was here to stay at Morphettville where it has been raced since, albeit at different times of the year.
