USA Horse Racing
Like many other countries, horse racing and betting has a long and proud history in the USA, where it remains a very popular pastime.
The USA is home to many world-famous races, tracks, jockeys, trainers and horses, which attracts worldwide attention every year.
Written by Mark Heywood
By the end of the 19th century racing had grown and flourished quickly, however tough times were ahead.
Anti-gambling sentiments in the USA led almost every states to outlaw bookmaking, a move that almost killed racing across the country. The arrival of totalisators and thus parimutuel betting occurred in the early 1900s, saving racing.
Endurance races take place over great distances on a variety of surfaces and terrains, anywhere from 10 miles to hundreds of miles over multiple days.
The breed runs at high speed over short distances, with quarter horse racing taking place predominantly over straight tracks of approximately 400 metres (quarter mile).
The Kentucky Derby is famous for huge crowds, with over 150,000 people regularly on course for the race. The Kentucky Derby 2024 edition will be run on Saturday, May 4th.
The Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes are known as American Classic races.
The Preakness is also famous for the music festival that takes place at the same time called the Infield Fest, that sometimes sees revellers get a little down and dirty as they did in 2018.

This year’s Breeders’ Cup will be held on Friday 3rd and Saturday 4th November 2023.
The race started with a bang, with a $1m entry fee and $12m in prizemoney in 2017, and $16m in 2018, making it the world’s richest race. The entry fees and prizemoney has dropped since, and the race is currently worth $3 million.
The Pegasus World Cup 2024 was held on January 27th.
The horse was later referenced in a bizarre statement by former president Donald Trump:
"So now even our Kentucky Derby winner, Medina Spirit, is a junky. This is emblematic of what is happening to our Country. The whole world is laughing at us as we go to hell on our Borders, our fake Presidential Election, and everywhere else!"
The incident led to a high-profile investigation into Baffert and the horse-racing industry in the USA, with the 2021 result being overturned by the Kentucky Racing board in February 2022, seeing runner-up Mandaloun officially become the Kentucky Derby champion.
Medina Spirit went on to finish third in the Preakness Stakes but was barred from racing in the Belmont Stakes, the third leg of the Triple Crown, due to the New York Racing Authority placing a suspension on Baffert. The horse still returned to action in November and was second in the Breeders Cup Classic.
But, the story had a very sad postscript as Medina Spirit then suffered a heart attack and died following a workout at Santa Anita Park in December 2021.

However, as mentioned earlier, Baffert's reputation took a hit after Medina Spirit tested positive for a banned substance in the 2021 Kentucky Derby. That led to Churchill Downs banning Baffert from competing in the Derby for two years, while the New York Racing Association also tried to indefinitely suspend Baffert and ban him from New York race tracks, with the NYRA overseeing the Belmont Stakes - a leg of the Triple Crown. This ban was lifted when Baffert took the NYRA to court, with a federal judge nullifying the suspension in July 2021.

US Horse Racing History
Horse racing in the USA dates back nearly 400 years, but the first organised meetings and clubs began to appear in the mid-1800s.By the end of the 19th century racing had grown and flourished quickly, however tough times were ahead.
Anti-gambling sentiments in the USA led almost every states to outlaw bookmaking, a move that almost killed racing across the country. The arrival of totalisators and thus parimutuel betting occurred in the early 1900s, saving racing.
Types of Racing in the US
Flat Racing
Flat racing is basically thoroughbred racing as we know it, and is widely popular across the USA. Unlike Australia, the vast majority of thoroughbred racing in the USA takes place on dirt tracks, rather than turf.Endurance Racing
Endurance racing refers to long-distance racing that takes place in the USA (and other countries). It’s seen more as an equestrian participation sport than a spectator or wagering event.Endurance races take place over great distances on a variety of surfaces and terrains, anywhere from 10 miles to hundreds of miles over multiple days.
Quarter Horse Racing
Unique to the United States, Quarter Horses are a compact, muscular breed that were produced by crossbreeding Colonial Spanish horses with imported English horses. The breed runs at high speed over short distances, with quarter horse racing taking place predominantly over straight tracks of approximately 400 metres (quarter mile).

Kentucky Derby Doping Controversy
The 2021 Kentucky Derby was clouded with controversy after the winner, Medina Spirit (trained by Bob Baffert) was later disqualified after testing positive for the steroid betamethasone.

Unfortunately, the governance and coverage of racing in the USA is extremely fragmented, and the media coverage follows suit.
