Punters post-race: The Goodwood day in review

Benedetta and Kah took G1 glory Benedetta and Kah took G1 glory Image: Brett Hartwig

Check out our take on Saturday's racing around Australia, featuring the Group One The Goodwood at Morphettville, along with plenty of stakes racing action on the Adelaide undercard as well as black-type features in NSW and Queensland.

Star Performer

Jamie Kah (Morphettville)

She's a star in every sense of the word, and the home-grown hero once again thrilled the South Australian crowd with a G1 win aboard Benedetta. You only get a select few chances to win a G1 on SA soil every year, and Kah made no secret she was hungry to put it on her CV this year - and now she's won two of them, with Saturday's success coming after the win of Coco Sun in the SA Derby. Most notable about her two winners on Saturday, both Benedetta and Boognish were at the front of a very jam-packed finish. Behind Boognish was 16th-placegetter She's Bulletproof beaten a mere 3.8L, while in the Goodwood, the last horse home was beaten 4.8L (and 13th was 3.6L back). It just indicates that there's few margins for error there, and Kah just has an innate sense of timing in the finish.

Front Bar Fodder

GOSFORD AT NEWCASTLE

The rain affected track
There was a bit of chatter throughout the morning as to whether there would be a meeting in NSW today. But Newcastle, as it does, again proved to be one of the best rain affected tracks in the country. Jockeys reported after the first race the surface felt good and it was a card where every horse seemed to get their chance.

Hezashocka proves the superior stayer in the Cup
Not many relish heavy conditions more than Hezashocka and he toughed them all out in the Gosford Gold Cup. Relishing the tempo set by the likes of Sir Lucan, he came with a charging run down the outside to nail a brave Sir Lucan in the final 50m. They gapped the rest.

Lloyd cleans up with a treble
Has quickly become one of Sydney’s top jockeys. Produced three pearlers on The Coast day with Pisces, Scarlet Oak and Semillon in the Listed Takeover Target Stakes.

Magnaspin kicks back to win The Coast
Proved to be a worthy trip all the way from Benalla to Newcastle for the Corstens yard as Magnaspin got the cash in the $500,000 The Coast. Has now had two runs on heavy tracks for two wins. If you backed Williamsburg, you would have left feeling sick to your stomach, with the horse clearly heading Mangaspin at the 75m before that horse kicked back to win.

Punters Pearler

Josh Parr on Speycaster (Newcastle R4)

Racecaller Darren Flindell got this spot on as Josh Parr, aboard Speycaster in the fourth at Newcastle, "pulled their pants down" with a rails hugging ride on the Waller-trained galloper. Drawing barrier 12, Parr opted to give his mount a stone cold ride back in the field and on a track that has played fair, went for the rails run and surprised those in front. Shot through the pack to score comfortably.

Honourable mentions

Blake Shinn (Sea What I See - Morphettville R5)
Sure, its the odds-on fav - but Shinn slotted in from the wide draw like the pro that he is, and the rest was history. The star jockey rarely makes a bad decision, and he's in supreme form of late. She didn't have much margin to spare on the line, so Shinn's economical ride was the difference (and would've pleased many a punter who had her in the multi).

Fred Kersley (Guerite - Donald R3)

Scary little incident here as Kersley's mount darted sharply to the left, but Kersley's balance and poise was extraordinary - he was pretty unflustered despite the horse kicking up a couple of dinner plates close to the fence, and they went on to win comfortably. But it all could've ended very differently.

Saturday Slaughter

Sky Racing for bumping Sea What I See

Morphettville ran about 1min behind jump time, and there was still 4mins to Newcastle - but it didn't stop the racing broadcaster from sending Morphettville to its secondary channel. Sure, if you're at home, its an easy flick to Sky 2 - or if you don't have access, then Channel 7 or Racing.com. But in certain pubs, the main screen would no doubt be on the primary channel, which might deny those the privilege. It was a horse shooting for six in a row - at odds-on - and Sea What I See got the job done. But if you're only tuned into the 'main' channel, you'd have missed it. Poor form, we say.

Saints  Sinners

SAINTS

Lachie Neindorf (Morphettville R7)
The recently crowned G1-winning rider added another Group win with this swooping victory aboard En Francais. It was a testing race as Chicago Storm was charged up a long way from home to get them chasing - which can make for some tough decisions for the riders out the back. But Neindorf descended late on the Stephens-trained galloper to swamp the leader and win by 1.3L, all that despite carrying 1kg over. Plenty of credit to the 6YO mare, but it took a well-timed ride to get there in time for the rising star hoop.

Positivity (Morphettville R4)
The Forsman-trained filly was the class animal here, swooping the field to win by 1.8L - with a further 3.4L back to third.

Annabel Neasham (Hollindale)
She has a knack for winning a Hollindale - it was Zaaki's chew toy for several years. But perhaps it is just the domain of another English export, Neasham, as another of her imports, Numerian, sailed to a dominant win at a massive price on Saturday. A fortnight back, Neasham quinella'd a Listed mile race at Eagle Farm with each of Mighty Ulysses and Jimi Hendrix defying their odds too as both were $21 or longer. Never mind the odds, Neasham's out to defy them any time, anywhere.

Jamie Mott (Sunshine Coast)
It was a handy little FIFO trip for the Victorian hoop, going bang with the feature win at huge odds on Numerian - plus a runner-up finish on Swiss Exile ($19). Pretty decent hit-run mission for Mott from limited opportunities.

J-Mac (Sunshine Coast)
James McDonald didn't miss a beat riding on Hollindale Stakes day. Despite his ride in the G2 being scratched, it didn't stop him from having a big impact on the day. His ride on Althoff late in the Ken Russell appeared particularly decisive, as he had to life everything out of the Waller colt to fend off the challengers.

Chris Waller (everywhere)
The power stable does have a stack of runners, but that just means the expectations are always high. Waller pocketed five winners on Saturday via a Newcastle double and a Sunshine Coast treble.

Navy Blood (Newcastle)
Strong win from back in the field at his first go in heavy conditions. Relished the speed  set by Xtra Gear and put paid to them pretty quickly.

Tanglewood (Newcastle)
Massive drift ($2.20 - $4.20) as the money came for Cool Duke but the Todd Howlett-trained galloper was too sharp for them. Delivers for those that jumped on at the enhanced price.

Scarlet Oak (Newcastle)
Wow! Some win from the former Kiwi filly. Initially settling a little worse than midfield, she improved to be leaders back and with Zac Lloyd taking an inside run, she flew straight past them while at the same time, never getting out of second gear. Could be anything.

Semillion (Newcastle)
Led from pillar to post in the Takeover Target Stakes. Looked to be under siege at the 300m mark but once he put the jets on, it was game over.

Tropicus (Caulfield)
Strong win on debut from the Anthony and Sam Freedman-trained colt. Well backed and the money was spot on.

He’s Beset (Caulfield)
The leader made him work for this win as Georgie Get Mad continued to kick but the favourite was able to dig deep for the victory.

Let’sbefrankbaby (Caulfield)
Worked early, took off a long way from home and stuck on for the win. Paddling over the final 200m but had enough in the tank to hold off Ferago.

Miss Aria (Caulfield)
Strong win from the Danny O’Brien-trained filly. Circled them from the rear and let down with a powerful turn of speed to record an arrogant victory.

Shock Em Ova (Caulfield)
Returned with a lightning performance, coming from last for a soft win.

Pereille (Sunshine Coast R1)
Opened them right up under J-Mac, who was having his first race ride on the horse in over a year. After four minor placings on him way back when, J-Mac opened up a space on this lot under the now 4YO gelding.

SINNERS

Imperial Force & Sovereign Hill (Newcastle
)
Both failed to fire in the conditions. Settled 1, 2 in the run but beaten a long way. Classy horses but both were below their best today.

Goldman (Newcastle)
One of the better backed runners at Newcastle. Got the lead all on his own terms but quickly folded when placed under pressure 300m from the winning post.

Tavi Time (Newcastle)
Given the perfect steer from Dylan Gibbons but he just couldn’t finish off, finishing unplaced as the odds on favourite.

Williamsburg (Newcastle)
Looked to have Magnaspin cold but he had a bit of a think about it after hitting the front with that horse kicking back to win.

Bank Maur (Caulfield)
Continues to race well without winning. While it picks up cheques for connections, it does nothing for his loyal followers.
