Trainer Gai Waterhouse has snapped up four UK stayers for a major tilt at the 2012 Melbourne Cup and while it’s early days, online bookmaker sportsbet.com.au thinks they may find the going tough in the race that stops the nation.

Julienas has been priced as a $51 chance in sportsbet.com.au's before nominations Melbourne Cup future's market with Galiando and Glencadam Gold at $71.00 and Monopolize at $126.00.

"You can see Gai wants to win the big one badly which is great for Australian racing but there are a few class stayers that might prevent her from doing that this year," sportsbet.com.au's Ben Hawes said.

Punters can also snap up odds of $31 if they think any of the four runners will win the Melbourne Cup in 2012.

sportsbet.com.au is also tipping Northern Hemisphere bred horses to continue their recent domination of the Cup, with a horse from the Northern Hemisphere winning this year's edition priced at $1.20 while $4.50 is on offer for a Southern Hemisphere runner winning.

Lucas Cranach currently heads the Melbourne Cup future's market at $13 followed by Illo, Americian and Red Cadeaux (all $21), Induna, Manighar and Atlantic Jewel (all $26) with 2011 winner Dunaden next at $31.
