The Quokka Race in Perth

The 2025 The Quokka - a 1200m special conditions slot race - will be held at Ascot Racecourse as part of the Perth Autumn Carnival on Saturday 19th of April.

The Quokka slot race is not a Group 1 race, but with $5 million dollars on the line in prize money, it is easily Western Australia's most lucrative race, so we have included it under our Group 1 calendar.

It's not the only big race on the day, though as there's also the running of the Group 2 Karrakatta Plate for two-year-olds that's worth $500,000 dollars.

Key lead-up races: T.J. Smith Stakes, William Reid Stakes, The Galaxy

The Quokka History

The Quokka race in Perth is the latest big-money slot race to be introduced by a racing jurisdiction.

It was New South Wales who set the ball rolling, though, with The Everest, which is now valued at $20 million dollars.

Victoria soon followed suit with the All-Star Mile ($4 million) while Queensland has the The Archer at Rockhampton and King Of The Mountain at Toowoomba.

But The Quokka horse race is the first time that Western Australia has ventured into this territory as Racing and Wagering WA look to shake up their Autumn carnival and make it more attractive for big-name stables and horses.

The Western Trilogy

The Western Australians have put an interesting spin on the slot race, though, as The Quokka race in Perth is just one part of a tri-code racing festival that will be held on this weekend in 2025.

The Quokka will be a thoroughbred racing slot race and it will run on the same weekend as a harness racing version called The Nullabor, which will be a $1 million dollar 2536m pacing feature to be run at Gloucester Park on the night of Friday April 12th.

There is also a greyhound slot race to complement this, the $600,000 Sandgroper, which will be run over 520m under lights at Cannington on Friday April 12th.

The three-race series has been named the Western Trilogy and is the first time all three codes have combined for a series of races in Australia.

“We’re excited to announce Australia’s first tri-code slot racing event,” RWWA CEO Ian Edwards said.when the races were announced in mid-November 2022.

“Western Australia is new territory for slot races and we are ideally placed to bring the trinity of thoroughbred, harness and greyhound racing together for the first time in one sensational weekend program.

“These three races will be among the richest in the state for each racing code.

“We’re delighted to host a unique racing weekend for interstate visitors during a beautiful time of year in
Western Australia.

“We look forward to revving up the colour and entertainment of WA’s autumn racing carnival by welcoming the best equine and canine talent from around the country.

“This will create the ideal counterpoint to our popular and successful spring racing carnival.”

There are other slot races in the other racing codes. Menangle will host NSW's first slot race for the harness code - The Eureka - while greyhound racing has The Phoenix at The Meadows.

Notable The Quokka winners: Overpass was the inaugural winner.

The Quokka Form Indicators

As The Quokka race in Perth has only been run since 2023, there isn't a great deal of form information and historical data available to help find a winner.

But some of the following data may still help a little if you are making a bet on The Quokka.

The Quokka slot race boasts a maximum field capacity of 14 runners, giving locals the chance to shine on the big stage. Horses that have excelled in Perth's Group 1 races during the previous summer, notably the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m), are prime candidates to secure a spot in The Quokka line-up.

Scheduled just after The Championships - which are held at Royal Randwick Racecourse on the first two Saturdays of April - The Quokka day serves as an exciting platform for emerging sprinters. Keep a keen eye on the feature sprinting events on the the first day of The Championships - most notably the TJ Smith Stakes - as some contenders may head over to Perth after this.

In terms of local lead-up races, the Roma Cup held two weeks prior serves as a key indicator of form and potential contenders.

Assessing the barriers and anticipated race tempo is crucial, considering Ascot's medium-sized track and the likelihood of a full-capacity field. While inside barriers may offer an advantage, a well-drawn wide horse or a strong tempo can also be advantageous.

As a Weight-For-Age race, each selected horse's suitability to these conditions must be evaluated. Expect a mix of seasoned performers and rising stars, some of whom may have proven themselves in similar WFA events during the Sydney or Melbourne Autumn Carnivals.

With various form lines coming together, punters must carefully assess each contender's credentials and identify the strongest contenders. Winning The Quokka typically demands the presence of a genuine Group-class galloper.

Lastly, prioritising horses with a proven track record over the 1200m distance at Ascot can provide valuable insights and increase the likelihood of success when betting on The Quokka horse race.

The Quokka Favourites

The current The Quokka favourites can be seen at the top of the Odds comparison table above.

It's tough to glean too much information regarding the performance of favourites in The Quokka from just one edition.

In this case, the very first favourite was the Simon Miller-trained Amelia's Jewel ($2.80 SP) who was just edged out by Overpass ($12) by 0.1L.

The bookies generally had the favourites pretty right for the first instalment of the race as second favourite Bella Nipotina ($4.60) finished in third, with the top three being separated by just 0.8 lengths.

For the second edition of the race, Amelia's Jewel has been installed as favourite once again, but it will be interesting to see whether she lives up to this billing in what may be her last run in Western Australia for some time.

The Quokka Weights

The Quokka weights can be found in our above full field table above.

However, as a general rule The Quokka is contested under Weight-For-Age conditions. This means:

Colts/Geldings (Four years and older) – 58.5kgs
Colts/Geldings (Three years old) – 56.5kg
Mares – 56.5kg
Fillies – 54.5kgs

The Quokka Scratchings

We'll advise you on The Quokka scratchings when they're declared on the Saturday morning before the race.

Scratchings are always a possibility in racing, no matter which race a horse is contesting, whether it be a Group 1 or BM58.

These scratchings can occur in the days leading up to a race, on race morning or even in the minutes before a race.

The trainer's decision on scratching a horse will often depend on several factors like the nature of the horse or the status of the track. Sometimes these scratchings can be tactical as well, with the trainer opting to run their horse in an easier event or a race where the barrier draw is more favourable to the horse.

If you've placed a Win/Place bet on horse in race (with TAB or another bookie) and your runner is scratched, you can get a refund equal to the value of your bet.
