Perth Cup History
A Western Australia premier race, the Perth Cup is a Group 2 event run over 2400m on New Years Day, with $1,000,000 prize money on offer. The annual event attracts a large crowd of more than 30,000 racegoers to Perth’s Ascot Racecourse.
Trainer Justin Warwick and jockey Lucy Warwick created history in 2018 by becoming the first father-daughter combination to win the race with Material Man. Prolific WA owner-breeder Bob Peters claimed his 10th Perth Cup victory in 2022 with the favourite Midnight Blue, who held off the fast-finishing Paddy’s Shadow and Platoon.
The Group 2 CB Ted Van Heemst (2100m) serves as the most important lead-up race to the Perth Cup, with Lord Ransom (2009), Cats Fun (2008), Palatious (1994), Mirror Magic (1992) and Saratov (1989) completing the double.
Established in 1887, the Perth Cup was originally run over two miles and stayed around that mark (with some minor changes) until 2009, when it was cut back to 2400m in an attempt to lure a stronger field across to Western Australia from the eastern states.
