The VRC Queen Elizabeth Stakes is a Group 3 race for three year olds and older, run under quality handicap conditions over 2600m at Flemington Racecourse. It boasts $300,000 in prize money and is held on the final day of the famous VRC Spring Carnival. In 2022 it was called the Queen’s Cup following the death of Queen Elizabeth II earlier in the year.
Phar Lap was a winner of the Queen Elizabeth Stakes in 1930 – the same year the champion thoroughbred claimed the Melbourne Cup. High Caste won the race in three consecutive years (1939-1941). The 2021 Queen Elizabeth Stakes was won by Warning under Nash Rawiller in an all-the-way victory from Sound and Wentwood.
Established as the Queen’s Plate in 1854, the race was originally run over three miles. That distance was cut to two miles in 1875 and floated between two and three miles until 1895, when it was trimmed to one and a half miles. The current distance was adopted in 2010.
The race was given Group 2 status from 1979-2004 and has been a Group 3 event since 2005.
