Roma Cup History
Roma is a small town in outbank Queensland, but the Roma Cup is about as far away from there as you can get in Australia!
The Roma Cup is actually a Group 3 sprint held at Belmont Racecourse in Perth each May.
The Roma Cup is run over 1200 metres at Group 3 level, with prizemoney of $200,000. It is the first of a series of weight-for-age sprint races held in Perth in winter and is followed by the Belmont Sprint, Hyperion Stakes and Strickland Stakes.
Despite this, the Roma Cup hasn’t always been a sprint race. It was first run in 1966 over 2000 metres, and dropped in distance to 1600 metres, 1400 metres, and finally 1200 metres in 1980.
