Naturalism Stakes History
The MRC Foundation Cup, registered as the Naturalism Stakes, is a Group 3 open handicap race run over 2000m at Caulfield Racecourse. Total prize money for the race is $200,000.
Some of the more famous winners in recent times include Brimham Rocks (2019), Jameka (2016), Zipping (2006) and Sarrera (2005).
The race is named after Naturalism, who won the 1993 Caulfield Stakes, and is highly rated as a guide towards Group 1 races such as the Caulfield Cup and W S Cox Plate. Since 2007, the Naturalism Stakes winner has obtained a ballot exemption from the Caulfield Cup. Jameka was the most recent horse to complete the Naturalism Stakes – Caulfield Cup double in 2016.
The Naturalism Stakes was established in 1983 as the VATC Royal Show Handicap, run over 1800m. The distance was increased in 1994, while the race was upgraded from a Listed race to Group 3 in 2009.
