Easter Cup History

Traditionally the feature race in Melbourne on Easter Saturday, the Easter Cup is a Group 3, 2000-metre handicap at Caulfield Racecourse.

The race was first held all the way back in 1909, when it was known as the Sandown Cup – one of a number of different races that have borne that name over the years. Originally a staying test over 2600 metres, the race distance was shortened to 1 ¼ miles, or 2000 metres, in 1972.

The most notable recent winner of the Easter Cup was Maldivian, who won the race in 2007 and would go on to be a hot favourite in that year’s Caulfield Cup, before being a late scratching in dramatic circumstances. Maldivian would go on to win the Cox Plate in 2008.

The Easter Cup was a Principal race to 1979. It became a Group 3 after that.

The annual Easter Egg Hunt is back for the littles ones to enjoy on Easter Cup day and a very egg-ceptional guest will also make a special appearance.

There will be kids’ rides, activities and entertainment on the front lawn for the children to enjoy too, as well as a variety of food and beverages available for purchase.
