Sunshine Coast preview and tips: Sunday, December 11

Only seven races but some handy horses feature throughout the card with depth in most races. The track should be good and with the rail out six metres all horses will get their chance.

The in-form riders pick the eyes out of these Sunday meetings and I will follow their lead.

Stuart Kendrick horses can't be ignored at these Sunday meetings and TORQUE LEICA STAR (8) got no favours from the gate when running on strongly to just miss the placings when resuming here over 1400m. The better draw helps and being out of a Zabeel mare this trip should be ideal. Steph Thornton stays on and a positive ride can see her home.

MISHANI MISSILE (2) came from well back to place at the Gold Coast last start and Jim Orman strikes better than 30 per cent at the provincials. Now third-up, he will be ready for this trip, the big track will suit and with four placings from six starts is due to break through.

KING'S HALO (1) drifted in the market but put in a sound effort to place when having his first start at this distance last start. He has placed at two of four outings this preparation and as one of few tested at the trip gets another chance.

SILVER PEARL (7) has fewer convictions than most and made good ground to place at her past two outings. The extra distance may help and Georgina Cartwright has been in fine form of late.

Verdict - With the local in TORQUE LEICA STAR (8).

A moderate group and I will give SET ABLAZE (3) another chance after disappointing at his past two outings but having excuses on each occasion. The barrier beat him last start and whilst not ideally drawn his best efforts have come with Tiff Brooker. Blinkers go on and she could turn things around to deliver a first winner for Belinda Mair.

PRIVATE BANKER (1) showed improvement to place at big odds here over 1400m last start. Fitter for that outing he will get a good run with Justin Huxtable and only needs to handle the extra distance to be in the finish.

SUBSTANCE (6) went forward from a wide gate and led here last start only to be found out late. Fitter for three outings he has drawn well again and with Georgina Cartwright could control the race.

TYSON'S FURY (4) has been trying for a while but is rarely far away and this trip may be what he needs. He gets a positive gear change and with Martin Harley from a good gate will get every chance.

Verdict - Hoping SET ABLAZE (3) can deliver the sentimental win.

Jim Orman makes these provincial meetings his own and HILO (2) is by far the highest rated horse in the field. He hasn't won for over two years but was racing in black-type company last preparation running fourth in the Listed Glasshouse here at his most recent outing. He won his most recent trial and only needs to bring his A-game to be too good for these.

SACCA (6) has been racing consistently at the provincials and was only run down late at the Gold Coast last start. All three wins have been here and with Nikki Beriman will be hard to pass.

BUNDYANDCOKE (1) can mix his form but won first-up last preparation and has benefited from recent trials. A strong speed here will suit and Tegan Harrison could swamp them late.

VAINLY (8) has come North after winning three times and not missing a place in nine starts. He has been off the scene for a long time but has benefited from a trial and has a good first-up record.

Verdict - Form is temporary, class is permanent - HILO (2).

Some interesting ones here resuming but one with fitness on her side is the Tony Gollan-trained WARRIORESS (11) which disappointed in a Class 2 at Doomben but is better suited at this class and distance. With Ben Thompson to ride she can take a sit off the speed and be hard to hold out.

Not many go from a Maiden to a Class 1 win but BEAST MODE (6) impressed when coming from a wide gate to score here on debut. He has drawn poorly again but drops 0.5kg and Martin Harley can repeat the ride.

VOLDEMORT (1) has been gelded and changed stables since running in Group races in Sydney last preparation. Lauren Abbott has had success with horses such as this in the past and whilst 61kg is a steadier Jim Orman will give him every chance

Shaune Ritchie brought BADGERS NUTS (2) over from New Zealand last Winter with races like the Derby in mind and whilst that was a pipe dream he did win a Doomben Maiden and is now with Paul Jenkins. He will want longer but has ability and could surprise fresh.

Verdict - A 'watch the market' race but class and distance suit WARRIORESS (11).

They will burn the grass here and that will help HIDDEN WEALTH (4) which impressed when never on the track but too sharp on debut at Ipswich in a 800m flutter. He followed that up with a sound effort behind stablemate Golden Boom here in a Saturday race last start over this trip and will find this easier. With Steph Thornton staying on he can sit off the pace and run them down.

IT'S GERRY (8) has come down from up North where he has destroyed them at both starts at Mackay. Northern form has stood up well in recent times and whilst poorly drawn he gets a 2kg claim for Melea Castle and may just be too speedy.

JUST GET BETTER (5) was only run down late by Storm The Fortress last start over 1200m. Some of these will struggle at 1000m but he won't and Tiff Brooker can have him near the speed.

SIGHTSEER (11) is a Maiden but put in good efforts to place at Wyong and Newcastle at his only starts. He is now with Kelly Schweida and with a trial under his belt can show up fresh from a good gate.

Verdict - HIDDEN WEALTH (4) will be hard to hold out.

Annabel Neasham produced AWE (1) in good order when resuming to round them up from a wide gate in this class over 1400m. The extra distance won't worry him and from a good gate with Yvette Lewis' 3kg claim he can go on with it.

PRICKLY POPPY (10) was held up when resuming but hit the line hard behind AWE (1). She improves second-up, will relish the extra distance and be hard to hold out.

RED LIGHT ROXANNE (5) has been improved by two outings and will find this class and distance to her liking. Nikki Beriman stays on and will have her withing striking distance throughout.

DANEZEL (9) gives them a big start but is suited by this track with Martin Harley staying on can improve.

Verdict - AWE (1) can go back-to-back.

Paul Butterworth has had two winners this week and can get another with LUCKY BEAN (8) which has come back in good order and was an easy winner at Toowoomba last start. This is harder but Madeleine Wishart stays on and she draws to do no work.

THINK I'M DREAMING (10) hit the line hard at the Gold Coast last start, goes best after a freshen-up, and with a Beaudesert trial under her belt will appreciate this bigger track. With Michael Cahill she can sit of the speed and punish them late

Adam Campton has had success with horses returning from Hongkong and FORMULA EXCEL (7) seems to be enjoying life in Queensland winning once and being runner-up twice in four outings. This class suits and with Brazilian rider Elione Chaves he will get every chance from gate one.

Steve O'Dea and Matt Hoysted have taken over the training of VYNER (3) and he showed he was ready to go with a recent trial win. His best form is over longer but he meets a moderate field here and with Ben Thompson can show up fresh,

Verdict - LUCKY BEAN (8) for me.
