Canterbury Race Course
Canterbury Park Racecourse, King Street, Canterbury, NSW 2193
Ph: (02) 9930 4000

Home of the Sydney Turf Club, Canterbury Racecourse is NSW's most prominent venue for midweek racing. Located a short 11km, 15 minute drive from Sydney City, Canterbury Racecourse lies opposite the Canterbury Railway Station, making the voyage to the course more than convenient for the public.

Canterbury is the only racecourse in NSW to host night racing. Its 1,567m circumference is surrounded by a high-tech floodlight system which lights up the entire course and brings the spectacle of night racing to spectators. The course's long curving corners give major benefit to front runners before they make their way onto the 306m home straight.

Canterbury is relatively small compared to a lot of metropolitan courses and this gives spectators a cherished feeling as they experience horse racing only metres from the action.

Barriers:

1000m – The start is on course proper and the inside barriers have a bit of an advantage on the 300m straight before the long sweeping final turn onto the home straight.

1100m – Similar to 1000m races, inside barriers lose just a slight amount of their advantage with the extra 100m on the dash to the final turn

1200m – Now the racing begins in a chute off the back straight and the opening straight is now 500m.
Barriers don’t mean much here.

1300m – These races are the same as the 1200m races, simply with an extra 100m in the opening dash.

1500m – Action now moves around to a chute which leads into the first turn. The chute is located just after the winning post and gives runners approximately 250m to jostle for position before the turn. This gives inside barriers an advantage.

1900m – This distance see runners commence from the top of the straight just after the final turn. It’s 300m down the straight into the first turn and sees inside barriers start with an advantage.

2600m – Starting on course proper at the top of the back straight, runners get 350m of running to find position before the first turn. Inside barriers have an advantage.

2800m – Barriers are in the same chute as the 1200m races and give runners a good 550m before settling into the first turn for the remainder of the long race. Inside barriers don’t have much of an advantage.
