Newmarket Handicap 2013

The 2013 Newmarket Handicap is anticipated to be the coming out for Moment of Change, who placed second to stable-mate Black Caviar in the Lightning Stakes, and is favoured for good reason.

The Lightning Stakes has been a key-lead with last year’s winner Hay List finishing second to Black Caviar in the event before claiming the Newmarket Handicap.

While Black Caviar (2011) and Scenic Blast (2009) recently claimed the Lightning-Newmarket double.

Newmarket Handicap Results (2012): Hay List makes History!

Last year's Newmarket was won by favourite Hay List, who caught a tiring Buffering at the line for a dramatic head’s length victory with Foxwedge taking third. With the victory Hay List set a modern day Newmarket Handicap weight-carrying record (58.5kgs), surpassing Black Caviar (2011) and Shaftesbury Avenue (1991) who won with 58kgs.

Runners that fair well in the Newmarket Handicap are top contenders for the William Reid Stakes (1200m) held Friday March 22, and the TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) on April 13.

Foxwedge turned last year’s third in the Newmarket into a William Reid win, while a year earlier Black Caviar completed the Newmarket-William Reid-TJ Smith treble.
