2012 Geelong Cup

The Geelong Cup has become a sensation for one key reason, it’s the premiere Melbourne Cup lead-up race in recent times.

It’s well documented the past two Geelong Cup winners claimed the Melbourne Cup double, Dunaden and Americain, but previous editions also played a large role.  

Crime Scene who finished sixth (2009) went on to grab second in the Melbourne Cup that year, while Geelong winner Bauer (2008) likewise placed second the first Tuesday in November.

A trend started by Geelong Cup-Melbourne Cup winner Media Puzzle (2002), with this year’s field seeking to continue the tradition.

Among the top raiders and southern hemisphere stayers contesting the 2012 Geelong Cup, with the current field listed in the multi-bookmaker odds comparison below include:

Bringantin in his first Australian start, Gatewood looking to improve on the Herbert Powers, Tac De Boistron in his first-up on Aussie soil and Maluckyday who lugged 59kgs to second in the Bart Cummings.

A key Geelong Cup form fact shows the past two winners (Dunaden/Americain), were also the top-weights. This year’s top-weights are Tac De Boistron and Maluckyday.

Also notable is in their most recent meeting, held at Longchamp in July, Tac De Boistron defeated Brigantin by five lengths at equal weights over a distance of 2800 metres.

While Exceptionally and Gatewood are the only other two that have gone head to head (Herbert Powers), with Exceptionally 2.5 lengths better over the 2400m.

Not to be overlooked is the favourites record, which is 1-3-1 over the past five years.

This past year Dunaden ($5.50) narrowly defeated pre-race favourite Tanby ($3.40) with Bauer ($5) carrying 56kgs to take third. For reference, visit last year's Geelong Cup form guide.

The previous year Americain ($10) narrowly defeated pre-race fancy Moudre ($5) with Exceptionally carrying 53.5kgs for a close third.

Favourite Sterling Princess (2009) finished third, pre-race fancy Baurer (2008) claimed victory, and favourite Zavite (2007) was less than a length second.
