The 2025 Australian Derby - a 2400m Group 1 race at Set Weights for 3YOs - will be held at Royal Randwick Racecourse on Saturday 5 April 2025 as part of the Sydney Autumn Carnival.

Australian Derby History

The Australian Derby was first run in 1861 as the AJC Randwick Derby Stakes, with Kyogle proving too good on the day.

The race was actually held in the Spring right up until 1979, at which point it was slotted into its current position in the Autumn racing season. The year prior (1978) there was no race due to reorganisation of the racing schedule.

Australian Derby Form Indicators

We'll have key details on the Australian Derby 2025 form indicators and field once it is released on the Wednesday before the race.

The key lead up races for the Australian Derby are the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) held two weeks earlier and the Group 2 Tulloch Stakes (2000m) held one week before at Rosehill Gardens. 

The Rosehill Guineas has supplied 13 Derby winners between 1994-2023. However it is important to note plenty of these Derby winners didn’t always salute in the Rosehill Guineas. Only 6 horses during this period have achieved the Rosehill Guineas - Australian Derby double with the most recent being Criterion in 2014. 

Interestingly, between 2017-2023, Quick Thinker, Jon Snow, Levendi and Angel Of Truth all won the Tulloch Stakes before taking out the Australian Derby. Ultimately proving that the one-week back-up isn’t necessarily a negative. In 2023 Major Beel came second in the Tulloch before taking out the Australian Derby.

Australian Derby Horses

It's wise to avoid backing fillies in the Australian Derby. Shamrocker (2011), is the only filly over the last 30 years who has managed to beat the boys. Of course this poor strike-rate is mostly due to the fact that most fillies contest the Australian Oaks the following week instead.

Only three times from 2001-2020 has an Australian Derby winner run worse than fourth in their lead-up run with Roman Emperor (2009) and Mongolian Khan (2015) both coming off fifths in the Rosehill Guineas, and Tavago (2016) improving on a sixth place in his lead-up.

Australian Derby betting favourites saluted on only six occasions dating between 1991-2020. It is certainly a race where value can be found, evidenced in recent years by Angel Of Truth ($15) and Ethiopia ($15).

Scratchings are always a possibility in racing, no matter which race a horse is contesting, whether it be a Group 1 or BM58.

These scratchings can occur in the days leading up to a race, on race morning or even in the minutes before a race.

The trainer's decision on scratching a horse will often depend on several factors like the nature of the horse or the status of the track. Sometimes these scratchings can be tactical as well, with the trainer opting to run their horse in an easier event or a race where the barrier draw is more favourable to the horse.

If you've placed a Win/Place bet on horse in race (with TAB or another bookie) and your runner is scratched, you can get a refund equal to the value of your bet.

How To Watch the Australian Derby Live

There's heaps of ways to watch the Australian Derby in Australia.

This is split among free-to-air broadcasters, pay TV and streaming services:

  • Free-to-air: Channel 7 has been the free-to-air home of Racing for almost the last 20 years and do a great coverage on Saturday afternoons, although you sometimes have to switch between Channel 7, 72 and 73. You can also watch horse racing events aired by Channel 7 on the 7plus app, while Racing.com is broadcast on Channel 78.

  • Pay TV: In terms of Pay TV, one of the following channels: Sky Racing 1, Sky Racing 2 and Sky Thoroughbred Central will broadcast this race.

  • Streaming services: People also have the option to stream Sky Racing through their bookie accounts, while Victorian and South Australian racing can be streamed via the Racing.com website or app on their device or desktop computer.

Racing NSW will also stream the race live on their website or app. Lastly, most Pubs in Australia will be showing live horse racing, but arguably the best place to watch any Group 1 race is trackside.
