Young riders' series up for review

By Mark Ryan

MELBOURNE, Aug 8 AAP - The Asian Young Guns Challenge, held at Flemington last Saturday, will be the subject of a Racing Victoria review.

"It's an interesting promotion," Racing Victoria chief executive Rob Hines said of the international apprentices' series.

"But I've heard some criticism of it. The jockeys are not well known to the punters so that's always a risk on a Saturday at Flemington.

"I think it's something we should look at. I like the concept but we should seriously review prior to next time what day we want to do that on."

The next Asian Young Guns Challenge is scheduled to be held again at Flemington in 2013 after being staged in Macau next year.

Leading trainer Peter Moody, who won the second leg of the three-race series on Saturday with There's Only One, ridden by Hong Kong Apprentice Vincent Ho, supported the concept but has reservations about its placement, preferring it to be after the spring or autumn carnivals.

The Challenge has been running for three years and was held in the inaugural year at Flemington and last year at Kranji, Singapore.
