Saturday Summary

Tim Bell won his first Group One with Tinto taking-out the Oaks Tim Bell won his first Group One with Tinto taking-out the Oaks Image: Daniel Costello

The Brisbane racing carnival once again produced some surprise results highlighted by Tinto upstaging the hot favourite Arabian Gold in the Group One Oaks. We also saw some highly competitive racing from Sandown and Rosehill.

Highlights of the day

Eagle Farm

It was a big day for jockey Tim Bell riding Sir Moments to a win in the Group Two Queensland Guineas and forty-minutes later scoring his first Group One victory aboard Tinto in the Oaks.

In The Roses a fortnight ago Tinto had to settle for second behind Arabian Gold, but with the rise in distance to 2400m Tinto turned the tables to score by one-and-a-half lengths with Sister Souss flying late to grab third.

If that wasn't enough for Tim Bell he made it three-from-three in Group races to finish the day when Sacred Star held on from Masthead and Bennetta in the Group Two QTC Cup.

Moriarty took out the Eagle Farm Cup with Nash Rawiller aboard. He got the split between race leader Wistful and Mr O'Ceirin 200m from home and sprinted clear to win by just over a length. Race favourite Akzar was third-last entering the straight and was left flat-footed by those in front of him finishing fifth.

The first-leg of the quaddie got off to a bit of a rough start with Aldini ($15) taking out the Listed Spear Chief Handicap. The big-priced winners continued in the Queensland Guineas with Sir Moments ($20) getting-up in the last stride over Liberty's Choice and Ryker. With 100-1 chance Olympic Anthem finishing fourth the first-four paid a whopping $71,358.70.

Sandown

Anyone who saw the barnstorming win of iron horse Gotta Take Care in The Australia Hurdle will remember it for a long time. The Weir-trained runner was spotting the leader Fieldmaster a huge margin approaching the final hurdle but sprouted wings on the flat to score a momentous victory.

Griante drifted out to $7 on track but was never in doubt leading all the way to win the opening leg of the quaddie. She just keeps on winning and gives the impression that there is further improvement to come.

St Jean stamped himself as a stayer of the future with a very comfortable win in the distance event.

Did the stewards make the right call on Dwayne Dunn's Onpicalo ride?

The Price stablemates Onpicalo and Mighty Like absolutely dominated betting in the last of the day and carried the hopes of quaddie punters but it was roughie Ali Vital who crashed the party, storming down the outside to win by a nose.

Dwayne Dunn's riding on the favourite was interesting to say the least over the concluding stages. Stewards accepted Dunn's explanation that he had to stop riding Onpicalo as it was shifting ground and he needed to straighten his mount.

Rosehill
It was all about Chris Waller and Jim Cassidy at Rosehill. The Pumper and Waller combined for a win in the first race of the day with Sniper Fire before Cassidy went on to ride three more winners on the card.

Waller made it five for the day when Tromso made it back-to-back wins at Rosehill in the final race of the day.

It was the second time that Waller trained five winners at Rosehill after he achieved the feat at the Lord Mayor's Cup meeting in 2013.

Ones to follow

Goldie's Image (Eagle Farm) - The winner Lucky Tom scored by three lengths but it Goldie's Image had have gotten out earlier in the straight it could have been a close finish.

Palmera Lad (Eagle Farm) - A little worried he could be a runner that is forever running-on, but again made up a stack of ground after being second-last at the 400m to finish seventh, beaten less than one-and-a-half lengths.

Rock Diva (Eagle Farm) - If she had of drawn a better gate she would have been right in the finish. Started from the outside barrier and forced to go back, she charged home from last at the 400m to finish fourth.

Escamillo (Sandown) - Didn't show much on debut but improved greatly 2nd-up to take out the opener in Melbourne. Still green but Jackie Beriman was pretty soft on him late and he could have won by more.

Lucky Generation (Sandown) - No match at all for the winner Escamillo but stuck on bravely for 2nd after travelling three-wide for the majority of the journey. Big gap to 3rd and there is definitely a win in him soon.

Griante (Sandown) - She's already attracted a stack of followers but there will be more punters jumping on after today. Watch for her in the spring.

Unlucky Runs

She's Clean (Eagle Farm) - Got caught on the fence and the well-backed favourite was never given a shot at them in the Listed Bright Shadow Handicap

Sister Souss (Eagle Farm) - Probably wouldn't have challenged the winner but certainly could have finished closer. Had to check off the heels of a tiring Raunchy Rocker 250m from home.

Ones to Sack

Single Style (Eagle Farm) - Stepped-away with them today but failed to make an impression as the $4.80 second favourite.

Pleiades (Eagle Farm) - Kept relatively safe in the betting for the Spear Chief Handicap but put in a shocker, struggling to keep up with the field for most of the race.

Lady Melksham (Sandown) - Unfortunately she's a completely different horse since fracturing her skull. Sad to see but certainly not a betting proposition these days.

King Triton (Sandown) - Hasn't fired a shot since running 2nd to Palmero (beaten 6.5L) at the Hillside track five starts ago.

Brazen Moss (Rosehill) - Talented but becoming very costly for punters. Until he improves his barrier manners he's not worth investing in.

Blackboard Special (Rosehill) - A horse that wants to be a rodeo bull. Has talent but can't run in a straight line and will no doubt be sent back to the trials again after today's erratic effort.

Scatcat (Rosehill) - Had the race run to suit today, back on the fence behind a couple of tearaway leaders, but only battled home into 3rd. Heavily backed today from $8 into $4.50 (ouch).

I'm Imposing (Rosehill) - Endured a pretty tough run in the early stages but that's three times in a row he's been beaten as favourite so he deserves his place in this company.

Haussman (Rosehill) - Had been going well until today but he ran like a tired horse and just struggles to run out a solid 1400m. Sack beyond 1300m.
