Roughie tips for Saturday's racing [Flemington, Rosehill]

Roughie tips for Saturday's racing [Flemington, Rosehill]

Here are the roughies we think can out-run their price for Saturday's racing.

They are not necessarily our 'on-topper' in their respective races, but we at least have them figuring in our top-three for each-way/exotics players.

FLEMINGTON

Race 2 No.9 Vagrant @ $14

Vagrant (9) is worth an each-way punt here at $14 or thereabouts. She is an ordinary beginner but she possesses a big finish on her day and the Flemington 1400m suits. She was competitive in the G2 Edward Manifold over this route and there has been merit in all three of her runs back from a break.

Race 4 No.13 Smullen @ $21

Smullen (13) could be the blowout at big odds. He was a soft winner of a 1400m maiden on resumption before running home strongly for 2nd out to the mile last time. He might relish the rise to 2000m.

Race 5 No.8 Never Again @ $14

Plenty of different formlines to consider here but rejuvenated veteran Never Again (8) makes each-way appeal from the good draw. He was terrific getting home hard for 2nd behind El Patroness at Sandown Lakeside two-back, before battling on well last time behind a dominant winner who had all the favours.

Race 6 No.12 Bold Bourbon @ $15

Bold Bourbon (12) is another on the quick back-up having won the Casterton Cup (2000m) last Sunday. He was expected to win ($1.90 favourite) but it was still a terrific performance, sitting wide for the trip before pulling away in the straight. He's flying.

Race 2 No.2 Poseidon Ruler @ $13

Poseidon Ruler (2) has been going great guns this preparation. Literally each one of his four runs has been better than the last. Take April 29 for example. He drew 15 of 16, was 14th at the turn yet finished fifth, four lengths off Wrathful, which makes that race better than most Midways.

Race 3 No.8 Swift Charm @ $11

Swift Charm (8) is talented and untapped. The Brett Dodson-trained five-year-old has won three of his five starts and was deadset the run of the race in his two defeats. One thing about him is that when he wins, he wins like the proverbial 'good horse'. This is his first real test but let's just say, he's done all his homework and is pretty smart.

Race 4 No.2 Battleton @ $13

Apparently, those closest to Battleton (2) and a few jockeys who have sat on him, have a favourable opinion of the son of Zoustar. At this point in time, he hasn't reached any lofty heights but there have been glimpses. Runner-up to Mazu in the Brian Crowley, second to Kiss Sum in the Gunsynd, third in the Fred Best. That's good form and the trial was a ripper.

Race 5 No.1 Smartawi @ $11

Race 6 No.3 Peshmerga @ $16

Peshmerga (3) was foaled in Germany. That's where our own Counterattack is these days. Peshmerga won on debut over 1900m at Chantilly in February 2022. Her other European win was in a Listed race in Germany. Fast forward to more recent times, the now Robert Quinn-trained mare trialled brilliantly prior to her 'fading' fourth here behind rival Money From The Sky. Don't think she will 'fade' this time.

Race 7 No.9 Demarcay @ $12

Demarcay (9) hasn't set the world on fire in his three Australian runs, which, for the record are '7, 8 and a 9'. But I thought that there was at least some merit in all of them. Having watched him closely, it does seem clear he is just a rolled-gold 2400m horse. Waller has him fourth-up (fit) now, Brett Prebble (tick).

Race 2 No.5 Safework @ $15

Many of these place more than win but Safework (5) has finally drawn a gate and has always looked better than a Class 3 horse. Two of his three wins have been here and there has been plenty to like about his two runs at Eagle Farm since resuming. This is his trip and a positive ride by Boris Thornton can get an overdue result.

Your tips did not add up but only Huetor won from all your tips. I tipped 6 winners on the day. I made a lot on the day. I collected 1 quaddie and 1 trifecta. N0 1 - 1- 11 - 11. Ok.
