Punters post-race: Derby day racing in review, Saturday October 29
Our take on a Derby day that saw J-Mac bag four at Flemington including a G1, Waller claim the Derby with a $20 shot and the Moody/Nolen combination triumph at Rosehill in the Golden Eagle.
Star Performer
It was her first race up the famous Straight Six and she was sent out favourite in a field of 17, with many colts vying for that 'stallion' status. J-Mac hadn't won on In Secret since her debut win at Hawkesbury, settling for second twice - including in the Golden Rose behind the barnstorming Jacquinot. But the tables were turned in a big way on Saturday, with In Secret putting up 4L on the Price/Kent colt - who had since gone within 1.55L of winning The Everest. In Secret didn't just win the Coolmore Stud Stakes either, she dominated it by putting up 2L on her nearest rival, fellow filly C'est Magique. This daugher of I Am Invincible is a jet and has a very bright career ahead of her.

Manzoice causes Derby boilover
Jockey Michael Dee continued his feature-race winning spring when running down well-tried favourite Sharp ‘N’ Smart in the shadows of the post aboard Almanzor colt Manzoice ($21). It was a brave run in defeat from the Team Rogerson-trained Sharp ‘N’ Smart ($2.90F), who was beaten half-a-length on the quick back-up from his huge Spring Champion Stakes run in which he came over the top late. The track was rated a Soft 7 for the first day of the carnival, after recent wet weather in Melbourne, with scattered showers during the day along with wintry conditions keeping it wet underfoot. Manzoice had been beaten 4.57L by Sharp ‘N’ Smart a week earlier, but the extra trip worked in favour of the backmarker as he used every inch of the long Flemington straight to let down and claim Derby glory for the Waller powerhouse. It is the second feature win for the Kiwi combo of Waller/Dee this spring, after Durston’s win in the Caulfield Cup.

Godolphin filly In Secret ($3.10F) was an emphatic winner of the $2m Coolmore Stud Stakes, claiming her first G1 win at her sixth career start. Despite there being a host of talented colts and geldings it was the fillies that ran the quinella in the race - one usually termed as being ‘stallion making’. The Graeme Begg-trained C’est Magique ($41) finished closest to the runaway winner, some 2L in arrears. The first colt home was Buenos Noches ($9), 1L further back after not enjoying the best luck in the run. Jacquinot was beaten 4L, having come through The Everest in which he was beaten only 1.55L by Giga Kick.

It's been an ongoing saga but top-line mare Icebath is finally a G1 winner. Some (including us after binning her last week) thought her winning breaks would never come in a big one, but she put egg on the face of her knockers when punching up the inside to win the Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) and cap her extraordinary - and indeed lucrative - career. Her earnings are now up to $5.2m after what was her fifth career victory. It was her 10th start in a G1, having been beaten less than a length in four of her nine prior attempts (including in the Cantala last year when beaten 0.1L by Superstorm.

They say Derby day is the best collective card of racing there is in these quarters - nine races, all Group company, three of them with a ‘1’ attached (previously four). And while there appears to be a shift to make ‘Champions Day’ the big one (the old Stakes day), Derby day still showed the cream rises to the top, via the feats of the hottest jockey in the land, James McDonald. Yes he gets on some of the best horses, both breeding and training wise, but the NZ rider also exponentially makes them better as well, booting home four winners to carry on where he left off in Cup week last year. Along with his feature-winning trebles on Caulfield Guineas day and Cox Plate day, J-Mac is tearing the Melbourne spring to shreds. He nearly made it five in the Derby when falling just short on Sharp ‘N’ Smart - he’s in ‘broomstick’ form!

Williams provides decent J-Mac support act
While McDonald took clear riding honours, Craig Williams was again to the fore on a big day - with a 285-1 double. He started Cup week with a dominant win aboard roughie Perfect Thought ($26) in the Carbine Club, and then capped his Derby day with the inside-hugging ride on Icebath ($11) to win the Empire Rose. It comes after he won The Everest on Giga Kick as an outsider, too. He's the ultimate pro when it comes to homework / track walking, and Willo knows what works for him to fire a shot on the big days.

Epsom Derby winner Serpentine may have bumped into one better in the Lexus Archer Stakes but he still snuck into the Melbourne Cup fieldas a result. The Robert Hickmott-trained, Lloyd Williams-owned import was outside the all-important 24 horses in the order of entry despite being above the minimum in the weights (53.5kg). But he needed to pass a ballot clause to boost himself up the order, and his placing in the Archer did just that - as he led and kicked, but ultimately finished 1L behind Surefire. The winner, from the Waller stable, isn't in the Cup, but still claimed the G3 race with a dour staying performance.

The Anthony and Sam Freedman-trained mare Argentia ($9) claimed the G3 Rising Fast Stakes (1200m), to go two-from-two up the straight. Her first crack up the straight course was on debut some 18 months ago in a 2YO handicap, when she stormed onto the scene with a devastating victory. On Saturday, she poked up the inside under Damien Oliver to the winner's stall for the first time in six starts (three seconds in her past five).

The speedy 4YO mare Asfoora ($3.20F), trained by Henry Dwyer, gave most punters a pleasing finale on Derby day, when showing them a clean pair of heels down the straight. She's now won six of her eight starts and is a likeable conveyance for punters as she does it at both ends. That horror show at The Valley three starts back is now well-and-truly behind her (but probably still living in the minds of a few ... )

ROSEHILL
Moods/Nolen combine for the Golden Eagle
It was a Victorian trainer who took off with the cash in The Everest and it was the southerners who prevailed again in the $10m Golden Eagle, as Peter Moody and Luke Nolen combined for another big race win. Kiwi galloper I Wish I Win had his colours lowered slightly the start prior in the Toorak, but he made it three wins in four starts since crossing the ditch with a nail-biting victory in the rich event for 4YOs. Hooked to the outside at the top of the straight, the son of Savabeel showed such a burst of speed that he hit the front at the 150m. I Wish I Win ($8.50) might have got a bit lost out in front as Fangirl, who was held up momentarily at the 250m by a tiring Mr Mozart, made a late dive, but he hung on to prevail by just 0.04L. The David Vandyke-trained Gypsy Goddess ran into third down on the rail. Light Infantry was very easy late in betting, drifting out to $5 where he shared favouritism with Chain Of Lightning. The import, now with Maher and Eustace, ran well though without much luck in the straight. Hugh Bowman on Fangirl took the run Jamie Spencer would have liked to have taken. Light Infantry finished sixth, less than 2L off the winner.

Last spring he was a G1 winner over a mile in the Epsom and finished fifth in the Mackinnon when tested over 2000m. This spring, he's become a top-class sprinter. He smashed them down the Flemington straight fresh in the G2 Gilgai before a huge run in The Everest, striking the front at the 25m before getting claimed by Giga Kick. He drew the outside barrier for the Nature Strip, but it was a nice bit of riding by Brenton Avdulla, who was able to slot in on Private Eye with a pair of runners behind him. He put on the jets at the 150m, sprinting away to defeat Mazu by 1.23L. Kementari was huge, rallying late for third after being wide without cover. Lost And Running was the disappointment, with the $2.35F finishing back in seventh. Jockey Hugh Bowman said 'he just wasn't quite right in the action' post-race.

Import Star Of India ($9) has made an instant impact in Australia for Annabel Neasham, narrowly taking out the Rosehill Gold Cup. The margin was just 0.05L over Hezashocka who was terribly unlucky. The Price/Kent Jnr gelding copped bad interference on the turn when attempting to take a run to the inside of Yonkers. This forced Jamie Kah to have to check her mount, before switching off heels and getting to the outside. Hezashocka picked up strongly again to miss by a nostril. It was a good race however for the overseas horses. Bois D'Argent cost himself by hanging out in the straight but did finish off well for third. Athabascan, having his first run in Australia for John O'Shea, was 0.01L away in fourth place. Meanwhile, connections of Stockman would've been happy with the hit-out ahead of Tuesday's Cup, with the Pride gelding finding the line nicely in eighth place.

Waterford ($1.90F) picked up his fourth win from six starts and made it three-from-three at Rosehill with an arrogant last-to-first victory. He was back in grade after an unlucky run in the Silver Eagle and Tommy Berry had a good look behind him as his mount swept past the field, striking the front at the 150m and winning by 1.19L eased down. Berry told the Hold All Tickets podcast during the week that Waterford wouldn't have looked out of place in the Golden Eagle had the import been able to qualify. Berry was quick to make it a double on the card, getting Pale King home in the following race over Pink Ivory.

Like Waterford, Cotehele was dropping back to a BM78 after contesting the Silver Eagle, and produced a similarly dominant performance, albeit with contrasting racing patterns. Jumping from a wide barrier with 60.5kg on his back, Jamie Kah was positive early on Cotehele and found the front comfortably. You never wanted to be on any other horse in the race as Cotehele ($5.50) kicked clear early in the straight and cruised to a 2L win over Democracy Manifest. It was a good finish to the day for Kah (although it came at a cost), who had headed to Sydney to partner Chain Of Lightning in the Golden Eagle (14th, beaten 7L). While she did go home a winner, she received a careless riding charge for shifting in on Cotehele approaching the first turn. She was also charged with careless riding in the Golden Eagle, which will see her sidelined from November 6 to 18.

EAGLE FARM
Mishani Madness
All went to plan for trainer Less Ross and owner Mike Crooks as the Mishanis filled the first four placings in the opener. The race attracted plenty of attention with the Mishanis gaming the system and dominating the entries - they had nine of the 10 runners and the first two emergencies - but it worked. It pretty much went to market expectations with the $1.55 favourite Mishani Renegade beating $3.40 hope Mishani Raider with Mishani Mystique ($41) providing some value for third. The odd one out, Magic Of Millo, was fifth.

Rockhampton filly Chinny Boom had taken all before her in the country, winning her first four starts by big margins, and there was some real anticipation of what would happen in her first trip to Brisbane. She showed her class. The $1.30 favourite sat second in transit before kicking away to win by 2L. Clint Taylor's 3YO is the real deal. It was the highlight of a treble for jockey Ben Thompson, who also saluted aboard Better Get Set and Ang Pow.

MORPHETTVILLE
Price is right with Philonize
Philonize left everyone at Morphettville stunned as she ran her rivals ragged in a breathtaking performance. Apprentice Ben Price let the $3.30 chance fly from the jump, rolling straight to the front at a good tempo – the majority of the field in excess of 10 lengths behind at one stage. Having gone so quickly, there was an expectation she would come back to the field in the straight, but it just didn’t happen. No one could catch Dion Koch's mare. The final margins were 3L, by 3.25L by 3.5L, and she stopped the clock in 1:02.44 – just 0.35 outside the track record set by Kymatt 18 years ago. It completed a treble for Price, who also tasted success aboard Whitchety Grub and Disco Tilmorn, so he’ll take plenty of confidence into Tuesday, when he’ll make his Flemington debut aboard Second Slip on the Melbourne Cup undercard.

The Shayne Cahill-trained Morty ($10) captured the day’s feature, the Listed John Letts Cup, improving his exceptional record over the 1800m trip at Morphettville. He’s now won three of four at the course and distance, Jake Toeroek giving him a lovely run in midfield before sprinting strongly in the straight to edge out The Map in a photo-finish. It’s the second black-type victory for Cahill as a trainer, coming four years after Burn Off took out the Listed Hill Smith Stakes.

AROUND THE GROUNDS
Scintillating Conteki hits target again
It looked like Miss Conteki was shot out of a cannon as she sailed past This'll Testya to take out the G3 Prince Of Wales Stakes at Ascot. Patrick Carbery took Simon Miller's gun mare back from the outside gate and he bided his time before unleashing her electric turn of foot, which was something to behold. She's now won eight from nine at the 1000m course at Ascot and 11 of 16 overall.
A Treasured Star is born
Adam Durant's progressive mare Treasured Star edged out a wall of horses to claim the other WA feature, the G3 Asian Beau Stakes. It was a contest where not everything went to plan with Last Of The Line coming out awkwardly and tipping Brad Parnham out of his irons while the favourite Trix Of The Trade had to go back to near last. Clint Johnston-Porter had Treasured Star just behind the speed, grinding away to prevail. There were a host of hard-luck stories behind. Treasured Star has now won four of her seven starts.
Punters Pearler
What a way to bring up your first Saturday metro win in Sydney. Mars Mission, who had been a drifter ($2.90 out to $4.20), was awkwardly placed down on the inside behind the leading two in the straight. As Mars Mission began to wind up he was in desperate need of a run, and at the 150m, Lloyd said to William Pike aboard Classy Jaybee 'get out of my way', as he pushed his way into the clear. Mars Mission went on to defeat Classy Jaybee by 0.69L. Lloyd made it a double in the penultimate race of the day when guiding Oakfield Arrow home in the Four Pillars Midway worth half-a-million.

Saturday Slaughter
Perhaps she was stitched up by circumstances after the horse bombed the start, but either way this was horror viewing. As many on Racing Twitter pointed out, not getting clear air for practically an entire race in a six-horse field is really quite something. And as the $2.15F, the pain was certainly felt far and wide ...

Sin Bin
He's not quite firing on all cylinders like he was this time last spring. He's had seven starts since winning the Queen Elizabeth last year and he's finished last in two of them and a fair way back in the rest. Time to sound the warning siren on this bloke ...
Sinawaan and Catalyst (Flemington R5)
Both have shown well above average ability but neither of them have won for a while and you'd have to think long and hard before getting in their corner again next start.
Foujita San (Flemington R7)
What to do with Foujita San? Has promised the world but failed to deliver - although he wasn't exactly a key fancy in the Derby. He's still stuck on just the one win and while the ability is there it's hard to know what his caper is.They tried something different here over the longer journey but it failed. Think a spell and a reset might be in order.
I Am Lethal (Rosehill R10)
There was nothing lethal about the gelding's performance on Saturday. He's now gone six starts without a win.
Release The Beans (Eagle Farm, R8)
The $3 favourite sat second in transit and just offered nothing in the straight. Maybe there's a deeper issue but on face value it was poor. He hasn't won since August last year and shouldn't be starting that short again in a hurry.
Keep Reading (Morphettville, R6)
Don't understand why people keep on piling into him. Hasn't won since August last year and gone under at $1.60, $2.40, $2.80, $2.90, $2.60, $3.30 and $2.60 in the meantime. He's not racing badly but it is insane he starts these prices.
