Provincial Championships Final: What the jockeys said after Spangler's win

Kris Lees has done it again, the Newcastle trainer winning a fifth Provincial-Midway Championships Final (1400m) at Randwick on Saturday, this time with Spangler.

Where last year's victory for the Lees-trained Kinloch was a blanket finish, this time the win was much more clear cut as James McDonald delivered a superb ride, guiding Spangler from near last early on to a four-and-three-quarter length win in the $500,000 dollar race.

Lees made it a quinella when Loch Eagle finished second as the Brad Widdup trained Cross The Rubicon completed the placings.

See what Jmac had to say after his win, along with all the beaten jockeys.

Winning Jockey: James McDonald (Spangler)

"He was there for me, I think he really really enjoyed that ground. The way he let go, he could've done another lap the way he was charging through the line.

"Obviously he's had the writing on the wall, a fit horse. Handles these heavy conditions and I think that just says how hard work the track is because he's a really good wet tracker and he got through it really well. It's testing work out there, it's really gluey but I had a horse that was there for me.

"Kris Lees is obviously a great supporter as well, (he) really targets this race with great numbers so well done.

"To Australian Bloodstock who put a lot of money into the game as well, they buy a lot of horses overseas and they deserve the results they get."

Dylan Gibbons (Loch Eagle, 2nd): "Wasn't entitled to run second."

Jason Collett (Cross The Rubicon, 3rd): "She gave a bit of cheek there darting through."

Brenton Avdulla (Kayobi, 4th): "He ran well. Presented to win the race but I reckon when I let him off the chain he struggled to lengthen. Ability has got him to run fourth."

Alysha Collett (Short Shorts, 5th): "She really struggled to let down on that ground today. Needs the track a bit firmer to use her speed to advantage."

Tyler Schiller (True Crime, 6th): "He ran to his best. He's just run into a really good field."

Kerrin McEvoy (Sebrenco, 7th): "Good run by her today."

Winona Costin (Herb, 8th): "Got into a really good rhythm. Hit the line well."

Hugh Bowman (Cruel Summer, 9th): "Actually ran quite well really."

Chad Schofield (Essonne, 10th): "Got put on the rail early. From then on we were always looking for runs. Never fully tested."

Joao Moreira (Willinga Freefall, 11th): "Disappointing. Didn't do his best today because the track is a bit soft."

Jenny Duggan (Denetta, 12th): "She ran a great race. She was a bit fresh today. Bottomed out 200m out."

Tim Clark (Phearson, 13th): "He didn't step great and got back and raced greenly. It was a train wreck really."

Andrew Adkins (Audette, 14th): "Very disappointing. Ended up in a nice spot but couldn't deliver when the pressure was on. Might not have handled the back up."

Nash Rawiller (Cloudland, 15th): "He's not a bad type of horse. Just has to learn to be a racehorse."
