Star jockey Joao Moreira has been ruled out of the Melbourne Cup after he was involved in a nasty fall in race four at Flemington.

The Hong Kong-based jockey was riding Regal Monarch when he came off his mount in the Ronald McDonald House Charities Plate (2800m).

Paramedics quickly attended to Moreira and he was seen up on his feet shortly after the fall.

He was later seen walking through the mounting yard and he gave the crowd a thumbs up.

Regal Monarch was seen being loaded on to a float to be transported to the Werribee vet clinic.

Moreira was booked to ride international raider Thomas Hobson in the Melbourne Cup.

Thomas Hobson, who will carry 52kg, will now be ridden Ben Allen. No other rider was available to ride at that weight.
