Caulfield Cup down to 23 horses

MELBOURNE, Oct 11 AAP - A total of 23 horses have been paid up for Saturday's Caulfield Cup which has a field of 18 plus four emergencies.

Newcastle Cup winner Green Moon, Macedonian and Spechenka are equal 17th in the ballot order with the Melbourne Racing Club to determine the final field on Tuesday afternoon.

Rebel Soldier and Midnight Martini have not passed all the qualifying clauses and the committee will also decide which one, if either, takes a spot as an emergency.

Sydney stayer Lamasery was missing from the acceptances after travelling badly to Melbourne.

Favourite for the 2400m race is December Draw ahead of Lucas Cranach.

The barrier draw will be conducted on Wednesday.
