Big Bets hits and misses: $10k bet fails to fire a shot

River Noire struggled first-up River Noire struggled first-up Image: Getty

Many punters expected the Moody and Coleman-trained River Noire to make a winning return in the Flemington opener but she only plodded home in a big result for the bookies.

Check out all the Big Bets hits and misses from racing around the country on August 5.

HITS

$10,000 on Benedetta @ $1.95 (TopSport)
$5,000 on Benedetta @ $2 (Neds)

The boom sprinter enjoyed a relatively soft kill first-up in the final event at Flemington, sailing home out wide to make it 5 wins from just 7 outings. She has started favourite five times and is yet to let punters down.

$7,000 on Brudenell @ $6.70 (TopSport)

Brudenell was beaten as a $2.15 favourite a fortnight ago but he atoned with a strong victory here in the seventh at Rosehill. McLucas took him straight to the front and he just kept on kicking.

$5,000 on Headphones @ $7.50 (TopSport)

This Jordan Frew-trained galloper continued her love affair with the Murray Bridge track, recording her fourth win at the venue.

$5,000 on Zarastro @ $2.15 (TAB)

The million-dollar yearling, on-sold for $32,000, was crunched into $1.65 here and never looked like losing. Now with Tony Gollan. he could prove to be a very savvy purchase.

$4,000 on Wategos @ $4.40 (Palmerbet)

Wategos is racing in a rich vein of form, backing up his win over Brudenell with a dominant third-up victory. The Bjorn Baker stable are firing at the moment and you'd expect this horse to attract plenty of support again next start.

$3,000 on It'sourtime @ $4.20 (Palmerbet)

It'sourtime shook off the bridesmaid tag to take out the Flemington feature race, the Group 3 Aurie's Star (1200m), in fine style. The O'Brien-trained sprinter absolutely loves the straight.

$3,000 on I Am Me @ $3.40 (Pointsbet)

This very speedy Maher and Eustace mare found the top in the G2 Missile Stakes and never really looked like losing from there. There was plenty of drama in behind her, with the second and third-favourites out of play.

MISSES

$10,000 on Mostly Cloudy @ $3.30 (TopSport)

Mostly Cloudy is mostly one-paced and it's hard to see him starting favourite again next start on the back of this underwhelming display in the fifth at Flemington. He finished third in the end but never really looked a winning hope.

$10,000 on River Noire @ $3.90 (TAB)
$5,000 on River Noire @ $3.80 (TAB)
$5,000 on River Noire @ $2.85 (Pointsbet)

Bookies got the lot in the Flemington opener, with Our Last Cash romping away with the prize at double-figure odds. River Noire jumped a $3 favourite but couldn't quicken at all in the 1100m straight-course dash, just labouring home for 6th.

$10,000 on Waverider Buoy @ $2.20 (Pointsbet)
$6,333 on Waverider Buoy @ $2.10 (Ladbrokes)

Waverider Buoy will be sick of the sight of Petulant, finishing a close 2nd to that galloper at her last two starts in Sydney. She worked home strongly from 9th at the 400m but couldn't peg back the winner.

$9,308 on Rodeo @ $3.30 (TAB)

What looks like a dumping of the punting balance ($9,308 is an unusual amount) ended horribly for this TAB punter. Rodeo was in front with 400m to go in race five at Murray Bridge but knocked up to finish 4.7L from the winner Keep Reading, his less-fancied stablemate.

$8,000 on Fawkner Park @ $2.70 (Ladbrokes)

The Neasham import had his colours lowered for the first time in Australia but he certainly wouldn't have lost any admirers, rushing home from the back to just miss behind Bold Mac. It doesn't help this punter though ...

$7,000 on Field Wiri @ $5 (TopSport)

Field Wiri ran well in race five at Eagle Farm but was just no match for dominant winner Bubba's Bay.

$5,000 on Burrandana @ $1.95 (TAB)
$5,000 on Burrandana @ $1.90 (Ladbrokes)

This Wagga-based galloper is becoming a little costly, finishing runner-up at his last three starts. Although he finished second again here, he was basically in another postcode behind brilliant winner Holstein who left his Highway rivals standing.

$5,000 on Aristonous @ $2.50 (Ladbrokes)
$3,000 on Aristonous @ $2.50 (Palmerbet)

Like he did at Caulfield two-back, Aristonous got back and made little impression here as a $2.50 favourite. The punters who backed the Neasham import didn't get much of a run for their money as he finished 4.62L behind impressive winner Verona.
