SYDNEY, March 10 AAP - The Anthony Cummings-trained Zavite has raced away with Wednesday's Group One Auckland Cup, aided by a heady ride from champion jockey Damien Oliver.
Zavite always travelled well for Oliver who slotted him in one off the fence from an awkward gate and was happy to bide his time midfield as leader Grand Affair strung the big field out.
Oliver made his move coming to the turn, setting Zavite alight to hit the front and he found plenty to hold out Booming ridden by fellow Australian Glen Boss with Tin Goose third.
The victory in the $NZ1 million 3200-metre showpiece was Zavite's first at Group One level and continued the recent success of Australian horses in New Zealand with A Gold Trail winning the Railway Stakes and Sister Havana the Karaka Million in January.
The winner of the 2007 Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Flemington, Zavite has now taken out six Cup races including last year's Launceston and Adelaide Cups.
He also contested the Melbourne Cup last spring finishing down the track to Shocking.
