Spencer to ride Purple Moon in Japan Cup

Top English jockey Jamie Spencer will be reunited with last year's Melbourne Cup runner-up Purple Moon in the Japan Cup in Tokyo.

Spencer rode the Luca Cumani-trained six-year-old to victory in the Ebor Handicap (2816m) at York before the Galileo gelding's trip Down Under.

Kerrin McEvoy had the mount when Purple Moon finished sixth to Master O'Reilly in the Caulfield Cup while Damien Oliver was on him when he finished half a length adrift of Efficient in the Melbourne Cup.

The Racing Post reported Spencer was due to have been in Johannesburg on Saturday week, the day before the Japan Cup, to take part in the Rest of the World match against South African jockeys.

However, it said there was a clause in his agreement that allowed him to opt out if he was offered a mount in the Japan Cup.

Spencer's place at Turffontein will now be taken by Darryll Holland. Five-time Indian champion Srinath Surender has also pulled out, citing "personal problems" and will be replaced by Mallesh Narredu who has ridden more than 1,600 winners.

Frankie Dettori, Mick Kinane, Christophe Soumillon and Australian champion Oliver are the other members of the Rest of the World team while Mark Khan, Anton Marcus, Piere Strydom, Kevin Shea, Weichong Marwing and Karl Neisius represent South Africa.
