MELBOURNE, March 13 AAP - Bart Cummings racked up Group One number 258 when Rock Classic lowered the boom on Sydney colt Denman in the Australian Guineas at Flemington on Saturday.

Denman had won nine of his 11 starts and was odds-on favourite for the 1600m feature but failed to run out the distance after a slow getaway and missed a place.

Perfectly ridden by Michael Rodd, Rock Classic settled fifth in the run and hit the lead halfway down the straight to comfortably account for Set For Fame and Linton.

"He had a few problems and we resolved the problems and the result's been perfect," Cummings said.

"He's a very, very good horse just learning what to do.

"He's got a bright future."

Rodd was effusive in his praise of both horse and trainer.

"It's great teaming up with him (Cummings) in these big races," he said.

The Guineas win took Rock Classic's record to three wins and a second from five starts for prizemoney in excess of $550,000.
