MELBOURNE, March 12 AAP - Promising filly Response will back up against the mares in Saturday's Matron Stakes at Flemington a week after her top effort in the Kewney Stakes.

The lightly-raced Charge Forward three-year-old was having only her third start when she was a three-quarter length runner-up to Wakeful Stakes-VRC Oaks victor Faint Perfume in the Group Two Kewney Stakes (1400m) at Flemington last Saturday.

Response was coming off a second to Europa Point over 1200m at Moonee Valley on February 19 which followed her impressive two-length Ballarat three-year-old fillies maiden win on debut on February 4.

"She'll back up," trainer Mat Ellerton, who was not surprised with the filly's excellent showing in the Kewney, said.

"I thought she was the best 40-1 pop I've ever saddled up in a Group race.

"I was quite confident she'd run a good race. She hasn't had much exposure so far.

"I think if she'd raced earlier and had a bit more seasoning she would have given Faint Perfume a run for her money."

Response will carry the minimum weight of 51kg under the set weights plus penalties conditions of Saturday's 1600m Group Three event and will be ridden by Craig Williams.

The filly is $2.80 favourite ahead of three-time stakeswinner Marveen, the topweight with 56.5kg, at $3.20.

Marveen, prepared by Robert Smerdon, was runner-up to Caymans in the 2008 Sandown Guineas and Express Air in the 2009 Queensland Guineas, both over 1600m at Group Two level, and finished fourth to Fifth Avenue Lady in the Matron Stakes last year.

The Orientate four-year-old, whose last win was in the Gold Coast Bracelet (1800m) in May last year, is backing up after an encouraging third to Captain Coltish in the Listed Schweppes Trophy (1400m) at Flemington last Saturday.

The event has been weakened by the fact that the Group Three National Jockey Celebration Day Stakes (1400m) for fillies and mares has been postponed a week due to the hailstorm which hit Flemington last Saturday.

Some of the mares in that race would most likely have backed up in the Matron.

After the scratching of Belscenica from the National Jockey Celebration Day, there are 13 runners with the Smerdon-trained Lady Lynette the $3.20 favourite ahead of Flying Tessie at $4.80, Bird Of Fire at $6 and Estee at $10.
