SYDNEY, March 11 AAP - Trainer Kris Lees hopes to stoke the fires of victory first-up with former West Australian mare Pure Fire at Cessnock on Friday.
The four-year-old mare also revives a long-term association with owner Peter Caporn.
Pure Fire, to be ridden by two kilogram-claiming apprentice Clare Pettigrew, steps out in the Minco Tech Benchmark 60 Handicap (900m).
"Pure Fire came over to go to stud in the Hunter Valley but failed to get into foal," Lees said.
"The owner, Peter Caporn, decided to give her another preparation with me.
"I've known Peter since the 1990s when he raced horses with dad (the late Max Lees).
"Dad and Peter have had a bit of luck together over the years.
"Hopefully we can kick her off with a win, get her some confidence in racing again and give us something to work with for the future."
Caporn is the owner of 1995 Magic Millions winner Zephyrz who was trained by Max Lees.
Pure Fire hasn't raced since her seventh to Most Secretive over 1000m at Belmont in May last year.
The daughter of Scenic has strong West Australian form with three wins and four placings in 13 starts, earning in excess of $100,000.
Lees has given the mare three trials to ready her - at Newcastle on February 1, Wyong on February 12 and Newcastle on March 2 when she was runner-up to Aspire.
"She's been in work with me for several months and is a nice type of mare," Lees said.
"Her trials were okay, particularly the latest effort.
"While she's only average size, she's a good type of mare.
"Looking at her form in Western Australia she looks pretty well placed tomorrow."
Pettigrew's claim reduces Pure Fire's weight to 57kg.
"On what she's shown me she looks up to metropolitan grade," Lees said.
"We'll see how she goes tomorrow and work out a plan from there."
