SYDNEY, March 11 AAP - A wide draw has put a dampener on Paul Perry's first-up hopes for Sea Spur but it is the forecast for wet weather in Sydney that has him most concerned.
Sea Spur has come up with the outside barrier in the 14-strong field for Saturday's Listed Strada Stakes (1200m) at Randwick.
While Perry is happy to roll the dice and hope his colt has some luck in running, he isn't prepared to start him on a track worse than dead.
"I'll probably run him if the track is alright but he is a duffer in the wet," Perry said.
"If it comes up dead that would be okay but if it's worse than that there's not much point him going around.
"The barrier is shocking. It makes it bloody hard, I'll leave it up to Hugh to decide what to do from there."
Hugh Bowman will have his first ride on Sea Spur at Randwick and while the gate and possibility of rain are negatives, Perry reports the colt has come back in top order.
He has won both barrier trials in preparation for his return and proved himself up to stakes level with a solid third to Stryker in the Listed Heritage Stakes (1200m) in September.
He was spelled after he failed to handle a slow track when unplaced in the Group Two Roman Consul Stakes won by Shellscrape but has won first-up.
Stablemate Southern Skye, who won the Geelong Classic in the spring and finished fourth to Monaco Consul in the Victoria Derby, will miss the autumn after suffering a setback.
Perry had hoped to aim him towards the AJC Australian Derby but a slight tendon injury has put paid to those plans.
"It wasn't much but it was enough to stop and tip him out," Perry said.
"Hopefully he will be right for the spring."
Group One winner Newport is also likely to bypass the Sydney autumn carnival and be aimed towards the Brisbane Cup after failing to fire in two summer starts in Perth.
"He's done real well. He's been back for a while and he will head towards Brisbane," Perry said.
