SYDNEY, Aug 31 AAP - The friendship between Tamworth trainer Leon Davies and former champion apprentice Cody Morgan dates back nearly a decade to a bush race meeting at Mungindi on the NSW-Queensland border.
Morgan rode Kiara Miss to victory there in July 2002, the first horse owned by Davies.
On Wednesday at Armidale the pair team up under different guises, Davies as a trainer and Morgan as an owner with former Melbourne-trained Nautical Mile.
The seven-year-old gelding tackles the Galletley's Saddlery Class 1 Hcp (1400m) with New Zealand-raised 4kg-claiming apprentice Brent McGregor in the saddle.
Morgan has enjoyed a wonderful strike rate with tried gallopers purchased from Melbourne.
"Cody's bought eight horses, seven have won," Davies said.
"He's got a terrific strike rate.
"Two of them have been with me - Prussian Secret and Liberty Edition.
"Prussian Secret has won four from six including the Armidale Cup and Liberty Edition won at Grafton.
"We're hoping Nautical Mile can follow in the same tradition."
Nautical Mile was previously trained by Wendy Kelly and has a win and 11 placings from 33 starts.
The gelding was a last-start 2-1/2-length fifth to Carnegie Dan over 1600m at Sale on August 5 when ridden by Craig Newitt.
"He reminds me a lot of another horse I had from Melbourne called Auditorium," Davies said.
"He didn't have great form but we won five races with him.
"Nautical Mile is a nice horse. He was light in condition when we got him and I've tried to build up his muscle content.
"He's a clean-winded animal, a big horse who has been carrying big weights on wet tracks down south.
"We haven't really tested him yet. Tomorrow should tell us a lot.
"Later on over a bit more ground I think he'll be all right.
"I've been happy with what he's done on the track and couldn't be happier with the way he's come along.
"His form suggests he'll have no trouble with the heavy track and if he runs up to his last start, he's got to be a good chance."
Wednesday's meeting was transferred from Saturday.
