Miss to launch Slipper campaign at Randwick

SYDNEY, Feb 8 AAP - Gimcrack Stakes runner-up Mafia Miss will kick off her autumn campaign at Randwick on Saturday when she resumes in the Widden Stakes.
Trainer Grahame Begg is hoping the filly can win one of the better two-year-old races in the coming weeks to book herself a spot in the $3.5 million Golden Slipper on Easter Saturday.
An eye-catching second to Gybe at her only start last October, Mafia Miss will be given the chance to prove she is up to Golden Slipper standard.
"I'd like to think she might be," Begg said.
"She trialled nicely the first time and she only had that one trial then went to the races and she certainly showed good improvement from her trial to the race.
"Unfortunately she drew the outside barrier that day and had to go well back to get some cover.
"I wouldn't think she'd be last if she draws ok on Saturday but she will be ridden off the speed."
Top jockey Corey Brown has secured the mount on Mafia Miss and he will be well placed to get a guide on her Slipper credentials.
Brown rode the John O'Shea-trained Solar Charged to a stunning debut victory in November and that filly was installed the $8 second favourite for the Slipper in opening markets from TAB Sportsbet released on Monday.
Begg's Villiers Stakes winner Palacio De Cristal will make her next public appearance in a barrier trial despite being nominated for Saturday's Breeders Classic.
She will step out in a heat at Warwick Farm on Friday and resume in the Apollo Stakes (1400m) a week later.
"She's not running Saturday," Begg said.
"I've decided to trial her on Friday instead and she'll run first-up in the Apollo."
Two-year-old Military Blonde, who has been entered for the Widden Stakes, will also bypass Randwick in favour of the trial track.
That will leave Begg with two runners at Randwick with recent acquisition At The Crease set to resume in the Southern Cross Stakes (1200m).
He has also been nominated for a Benchmark 85 Hcp (1400m) on the same program but after missing out on a barrier trial this week when they were abandoned due to the wet weather, Begg has elected to kick him off in the shorter race.
