SYDNEY, March 10 AAP - Punters were the big winners when debutant Masquerader scored at Canterbury on Wednesday to set up a possible tilt at the Golden Slipper.
The David Payne-trained colt was crunched from $7 to $4.80 after double figures were bet on Tuesday.
Although he had a torrid time early in the slipper.com.au Handicap (1100m) and again in the straight, Masquerader showed tenacity to fight back when headed by Milanesa.
"He's a serious racehorse," Payne said.
"He will improve a lot from this and we'll run him in a race like the Todman Stakes.
"He is not nominated for the Slipper but if he can win a race like the Todman then that's enough to pay the late entry fee."
Masquerader was a $90,000 purchase at the breeze-up sale, a concept Payne likes.
"It's good to be able to see the young horses run," he said.
"You get an idea of what they can do."
