SYDNEY, July 2 AAP - Promising three-year-old Jewel Colours chases a winning double at Goulburn on Friday when he is out continue the family tradition of winners trained by Dave Heywood.
The gelding, with Nick Souquet in the saddle, lines up in the Bullarook Stud Hcp (1000m).
Jewel Colours hasn't raced since scoring in a Class 1 over 1000m at Wagga on May 15 when he bolted in by 4-1/2 lengths.
That followed placings at the same track on April 19 and 30 to Back To Zero and Panderelle respectively.
"It was an impressive win last start," Heywood said.
"But he didn't pull up too well after it. That's why I've given him a bit of a break.
"He had a bit of a cough and a couple of niggling things, nothing too serious. I just took my time with him.
"He's a big horse, still very immature but we're getting there.
"Hopefully we can turn him into a good horse, he's been impressive in his two wins and even some of the placings.
"Since the break, he's back working good. I've got no worries on the score of fitness tomorrow.
"He's got the same weight (59.5kg) as last start and a decent barrier (seven)."
Jewel Colours has two wins and three placings from six starts.
Heywood has had a long association with the family of Jewel Colours' dam, Cloudy Spring.
"Cloudy Spring's mother (Golden Spring) is by Northern Spring, the sire of King Of Indies and Pride Of Indies, full-brothers I won a lot of races with," Heywood said.
"They were horses that trained on and got better as five and six-year-olds. Jewel Colours is like them.
"I don't want to race the guts out of him as a three-year-old, he'll probably have another run then a long spell and bring him back for the spring.
"I want to look after him. He's got a good future."
Jewel Colours and Patois, trained by Patinack Farm's Jason Coyle, share favouritism at $5 in early markets.
