SYDNEY, Sept 2 AAP - Stephen Farley is quietly confident Gazza Guru can cause an upset and claim a home-town win in Friday's Listed Wyong Gold Cup.
The six-year-old gelding is in career-best form and will be out to repel the city raiders in the $120,000 2100m feature on the NSW central coast.
"The Wyong Gold Cup has always been in the back of our minds and I think he (Gazza Guru) is racing in career-best form," Wyong-based Farley said.
"I'm quietly confident without getting too carried away.
"He's had a good preparation going into the race, a few of the top chances have to back up from Saturday and if there's any chinks in their armour then hopefully we'll be there."
The trainer rated the Sydney-based horses at the head of the weights - Snow Alert, Hawk Island, Twin Wing and Music Review - as definitely the horses to beat.
Gazza Guru finished sixth in the Coffs Harbour Cup (1600m) early last month and was third in the Taree Cup (2000m) on August 22.
Sandwiched between his two country Cup runs was a midweek win over 1800m on the Kensington track at Randwick.
"He didn't have a lot of luck in his Coffs Harbour and Taree Cup runs," Farley said.
"At Taree he got a long way back with a hectic speed and didn't get a couple of runs he went for, but he flashed late for third."
The day's other feature at Wyong is the Listed Mona Lisa Stakes (1350m) for fillies and mares which will see the return of Group One winner Once Were Wild.
The AJC Australian Oaks winner has had two trials ahead of her spring resumption and leading jockey Nash Rawiller believes the four-year-old has returned better than ever.
"She never had what you would call the most beautiful action, especially last time in, but this time in she's come back feeling enormous," Rawiller said.
"Everyone that rides her says they couldn't be happier with her."
Once Were Wild is rated a $16 chance with TAB Sportsbet for this year's Caulfield Cup and is at $26 to win the 150th running of the Melbourne Cup.
