SYDNEY, July 1 AAP - Trespassing onto a NSW racing track could land offenders with a fine of up to $5,500 or a lifetime ban, the NSW government says.
Less than a month after serial pest Peter Hore jumped into NSW parliament's bear pit, disrupting the start of question time, NSW Racing and Gaming Minister Kevin Greene announced the tough new penalties for "Peter Hore-style racetrack invasions".
The new penalties come 12 years after Hore jumped the fence at the 200m mark of the 1997 Melbourne Cup.
The minister said there had been concern for some time over the danger of people jumping onto racetracks.
"These idiots are not only a danger to themselves, they also put the lives of jockeys, drivers, course clerks and animal handlers at risk," he said in a statement.
"Racing participants and their animals have a right to conduct races in a safe environment."
Fines will apply to thoroughbred, harness and greyhound race meetings.
Hore has previously interrupted the funeral of rock singer Michael Hutchence and ripped the goal net during Australia's crucial soccer World Cup qualifier against Iran in Melbourne in 1997.
He has also invaded the South Australian parliament and once charged supermodel Sarah O'Hare on stage during a lingerie launch in Brisbane.
