SYDNEY, March 11 AAP - Consistent three-year-old The Boondock Saint continues his march towards the $27,000 Wagga Guineas at Dubbo on Friday.
Trained by Trevor Sutherland at Wagga, The Boondock Saint tackles the Angus & Coote Orana Mall Benchmark 60 Handicap (1600m).
The gelding by Choisir, the top-priced lot at $33,000 from the Dubbo yearling sales, will be ridden by Andrew Bloomfield.
"He'll probably have only a run or two before the Wagga Guineas (May 7) and likely to start in the Wagga Cup Prelude (1800m) as his final lead-up," Sutherland said.
"The Guineas is his aim this year then the Wagga Cup next year.
"This preparation I've been patient with him, training him to stay.
"I've changed a few things, lengthened his work.
"He can still sprint but is learning to switch off and relax."
The Boondock Saint, part-owned by the Arlington Racing Syndicate managed by long-time Sutherland client Brett Bradley, has three wins and five placings from 14 starts and $43,600 in prizemoney.
Last start the powerfully-built gelding led and was collared on the post, going down by a half-head to Dapper Chic in a Benchmark 65 Handicap over 1600m at Wagga on February 27.
"I had him in a race at Corowa (last Sunday) but it was called off," Sutherland said.
"This preparation I may have cost him a win or two because I've trained him as a stayer and a few of the boys (jockeys) have been caught napping a bit thinking he's going to sit and sprint.
"He led last start. He's won leading and won coming from last. That gives us options.
"He's a three-year-old and most of the time he's got beaten by much older horses carrying the same weight.
"The horse is still growing but hasn't suffered from soreness behind this time and looks a treat. He's got stronger this preparation.
"I've been very happy with him since Wagga. Tomorrow looks a race well within his scope and I'm heading to Dubbo confident of a good day.
"From the barrier (12) he'll probably take a sit.
"It's a long way up that Dubbo straight."
