SYDNEY, Feb 23 AAP - Trainer Chris Heywood hopes to continue his success when he steps Rebu and Lightning Jo up in class at Goulburn on Friday.

The former amateur jockey has been training for several years and thinks enough of the stablemates to test them against better-quality opposition.

Rebu has won twice for Heywood, while Lightning Jo indicated she was close to a win with a strong second at Wagga at her first start for the stable.

"I think they are both the type of horses capable of racing well in this type of class and even midweek city company," Heywood said.

"Rebu was originally with me and then went to a couple of other trainers before I got him back.

"He has settled down in his trackwork and you couldn't ask for a nicer horse.

"It's a tougher race, but I'm sure he will race well."

Top country jockey Mathew Cahill will have the mount on Rebu in the Weddings & Functions On Track Benchmark 60 (1200m) while Richard Bensley partners Lightning Jo in the Pirtek Benchmark 55 (1600m).

Rebu is part-owned by mother and son Dianna and Tim Boyd of Young who have raced several handy gallopers, while Bob and Alison Manwaring of Harden own Lightning Jo.

Formerly based at Harden but now at Young with a team of 10, Heywood is confident the duo can win their share of races in the right grade.

Rebu has won two of his five starts this preparation and has improved, according to his trainer.

"He looks magnificent and it was a fairly strong race he won last time. I know Friday will be harder again, but he is a bit better than last start," Heywood said.

"Lightning Jo was a bit of a hothead and hard to control, but is settling down.

"She was a little underdone last time and she will be fitter as well."

Lightning Jo was only beaten a nose at Wagga at her first start in the region after winning two races in Queensland and also spending time with leading trainer Chris Waller.

"She wasn't relaxing before, but she is getting better and finishing off her races," Heywood said.

Lightning Jo's main danger could be last-start Goulburn winner It's HELL ON HEELS from the Theresa Bateup stable.
