MELBOURNE, March 10 AAP - Robbie Laing believes Bambina has a good future after the three-year-old filly broke through for her first win at her fourth race start at Sandown on Wednesday.
Laing bought the daughter of Pentire for $NZ23,000 at the Festival Yearling Sale in New Zealand before former stablemate Lakonian had raced.
Lakonian had won two provincial races and been placed in his four other starts including a half-neck second to subsequent Melbourne Cup winner Shocking in a three-year-old event over 1600m at Flemington last May before being sold to Hong Kong for $900,000.
"She has a bit of a turn in one of her front legs. We didn't pay a lot of money for her but she can certainly gallop," Laing said after Bambina took out the Waratah Hcp (1000m).
"She was only in the Festival Sale because of her off-front knee.
"Her brother Lakonian was flying at the time before he had raced. He happened to produce it on the track and I bid for this filly on the phone actually.
"She must have thrown to Centaine because she's got a good turn of foot.
"We hope being by Pentire with the speed she's got if she can get over ground she'll make a smart horse."
Her dam She's Heaven Cent, by Centaine, was prepared by Guy Walter and won twice at Randwick from only six career starts.
Bambina ($14) finished strongly to score by 1-1/4 lengths from Happy Angel ($7) with Beyond Pardon ($2.60 fav) a length away third.
