Melbourne Cup TAB

For most Australian's, betting with the TAB on Melbourne Cup day is the easiest way to get your bet on.  TABs are located in every major town across Australia in all states. Unitab (Tatts), NSW TAB, VIC TAB, The Tote, ACT TAB and WA TAB are the specific names given in each state but are more commonly referred to as just the 'TAB'.

How does the TAB work?

A TAB is different to a bookmaker in that when you bet on a horse, the odds will change depending on how many other people bet on that horse too.  Think of it as a popularity contest.  The more people think a horse will win, the lower it's price will go.  The less people think a horse will win, the higher the price will go.  It's for this reason why looking at the odds will help you understand what are the chances of a horse winning will be.

Better odds than the TAB

Competition amongst bookmakers is fierce.  No longer is the TAB the most competitive price around as the TABs across Australia often take between 15-20% from the pool of money invested.  This means that the winnings going into your pocket will be far less over a length of time.  It's common practise now for bookmakers to take as little as 10% from the pool of money and in some cases exchange services such as Betfair take just 3-5%.

Shopping around for the best price is no different to shopping around for a credit card, flights or a hotel.  It pays to look around, even if you just want to place a bet of a few dollars.  Shopping around for the best TAB and bookmaker odds The Melbourne Cup Odds Comparison tool is the quickest way to find the best odds available for your horse.
