Southern Speed 2011
Southern Speed saved her best for the biggest stage of her career, while earning redemption for earlier doubts.
The Leon Macdonald trained Southern Image filly, sent out at $11.00, shrugged off a step up in distance and nine highly regarded International raiders to capture the 2011 Caulfield Cup and the $1.65million first prize it offered.
Ridden perfectly by Craig Williams, Southern Speed ran past the Robert Hickmott trained Green Moon (IRE) to score a one and half length victory, with the Gai Waterhouse trained Tullamore (NZ) finishing third.
Prior to the 2400 metre Caulfield Cup, Southern Speed showed flashes of potential but failed to deliver a signature win.
In her lead-up to the third richest race in Australia, Southern Speed finished fourth in the tightly contested Turnbull Stakes to winner December Draw (IRE), and was runner-up by 1.25 lengths to Lion Tamer (NZ) in the Underwood Stakes.
But in one glorious two minute and twenty-eight second span on the 15th of October, Southern Speed confirmed her class and offered a glimpse of what the future may bring. A future that started in her first up race of 2012.
Southern Speed 2012
Southern Speed began 2012 with a bang, winning the John Dillon Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield in January.
Sent out at $9.00, well behind favourites Shadowfax (NZ) and Shout Out Loud, Southern Speed defied big weights (60kgs) and doubts about her sprinting ability while making the victory look easy.
In Southern Speed’s next start, the Group 1 Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield, she showed great form coming from the rear to finish second 3.75 lengths behind dominant favourite Black Caviar.
Following the Orr Stakes Southern Speed was aimed at the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m). Southern Speed entered as the Peter Young Stakes favourite, in the face of a bumper field of Australasian and International stayers.
During the race Southern Speed found herself tight to the back of the pack resulting in a fifth, while Lucas Cranach led a devasting assault to register his first win in Australia, a 1.5 length victory over Illo with Manighar placing third.
In Southern Speed's next run, which took place in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m), she faced Americain who was running first-up. In addition to re-matches with Peter Young Stakes place-getter Illo, and third finisher Manighar.
Ridden brilliantly by Craig Williams, Southern Speed ($8) led down the straight before being nosed at the line by a surging Manighar ($6.50). The result was a thrilling photo-finish, with dominant favourite Americain ($2.50) a fast closing third.
Fresh off this impressive showing, Southern Speed made her Sydney debut in the Ranvet Stakes at Rosehill Gardens the 24th of March, racing clockwise the first time in her career. The Group 1 event (2000m) offered $400,000 in prize money.
During the Ranvet Manighar ($6.50) defeated Rangirandoo ($17) by a half-head, with Shoot Out ($3.10) a length back in third. Southern Speed ($7), required a new shoe delaying the race, looked uncomfortable out the gate and finished fifth.
If she pulls up well Southern Speed's next race, and sixth of this campaign, will take place in the BMW Stakes.
BMW Stakes
The BMW Stakes (2400m), held at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday the 7th of April, is for stayers three years and up.
The richest Australian weight-for-age race during the Autumn season, the BMW Stakes offers $2.25million in prize money and is likely to be contested by Manighar, Americain and other top stayers.
For detailed performance profiles, including head-to-head results, visit the BMW Stakes form guide, which will be available three days before the event jumps.
For the best betting prices on offer, see the BMW Stakes odds comparison table, which will also be posted three days before the race is run.
If Southern Speed contests the BMW Stakes, it would give the Caulfield Cup winner a go in four group 1 events, out of the six races planned for this ambitious campaign.
