Congratulations to Red Cadeaux on placing second in the 2011 Melbourne Cup in the closest finish in the prestigious event’s 151 year history!
Red Cadeaux, in the narrowest finish in the 151 year history of the magnificent race, was beaten across the winning post by the length of a nose by winner Dunaden in a sensational race.
Red Cadeaux entered the 2011 Melbourne Cup with win odds in the $31.00 range, which placed him eighth in the order well behind both the race favourite Americain, as well as Dunaden who was assigned to place second.
With a victory, Red Cadeaux would’ve become the longest priced winner in the past twenty plus years, surpassing Terrific (1989) who started at $30.00.
Instead, the Ed Dunlop trained Red Cadeaux (GB) earned a nifty $900,000 payday for the effort, more than double the six year old Cadeaux Genereux gelding’s total career earnings. Equally impressive, it was Red Cadeaux’s first up run on Australian soil.
Prior to his assault on the Melbourne Cup Red Cadeaux placed third in the 2011 Irish St. Leger, a 2800 metre Group 1 event that was held on the 10th of September.
With the momentum gained from his Melbourne Cup showing, Red Cadeaux’s next race took place in the Group 1 Hong Kong Vase at Sha Tin on Sunday the 11th of December.
The 2011 Hong Kong Vase, one of four Group 1 events held during the Turf World Championships at the Cathay Pacific international races, was a 2400 metre race with prize money totaling $1.8million AU (HK14million).
During the Hong Kong Vase Red Cadeaux was once again tasked with dueling Dunaden, who entered as the race favourite. Red Cadeaux put forth a gallant effort finishing third to Dunaden, just behind local stayer Thumbs Up who placed second.
With a strong showing in two consecutive highly acclaimed International challenges, Red Cadeaux has certainly proved his form and dispelled his doubters.
