Welcome to our Ranger page

Entering the 2012 racing season Ranger’s connections are seeking to build on the confidence he gained during his last campaign of 2011. A campaign that saw the Testa Rossa gelding go 3-1-1, while nearly earning his first Group 1 win.

The pivotal moment of Ranger’s final campaign of 2011 came during the Lee Steere Stakes, a Group 2 event held on Emirates Stakes Day, when he defeated race favourites Grand Nirvana and Waratah's Secret to secure his third straight victory at 1400 metres.

This victory vaulted Ranger into Railway Stakes contention, and provided the Grant Williams’ trained gelding his second shot at a Group 1 race. The 2011 Railway Stakes, a 1600 metre event open to horses three years old and up, offered prize money totaling $1million.

Ranger entered as the Railway Stakes favourite but fell short of expectations when he finished sixth behind Luckygray, who was declared the winner after a lengthy and controversial protest was upheld.

In Ranger's next start, the $500,000 Group 1 Kingston Town Classic, he was given an opportunity to atone for his disappointing Railway Stakes showing.

Sent out as the favourite to place behind rival Luckygray, the William Pike ridden Ranger put forth a gallant effort, but was passed down the stretch by Playing God ($19.00) to finish second by a short length.

Ranger concluded this campaign with a run in the Group 2 C B Cox Stakes (2100 metres), where in spite of the step up in distance he entered as the favourite.

During the C B Cox Ranger found himself nearly 12 lengths behind at the mid-way point, but put forth a gallant effort in the final 500 metres to close the gap, resulting in a third place finish behind surprise winner God Has Spoken ($21.00) and place-getter Kincaple.

As a result of these showings Ranger enters 2012 still seeking that elusive Group 1 win, and his connections are expected to give him every possible chance.

Ranger 2012

Ranger’s next start took place in the Carlyon Cup on C F Orr Stakes day at Caulfield on the 11th of February. The 2012 Carlyon Cup was a 1600 metre Group 3 set-weight event open to milers of any age and gender that offered prize money totaling $125,000.

Sent out as the favourite ($3.40), Ranger got off to a slow start but finished strong to place fifth a little over four lengths behind Peter Moody’s imported stayer Manighar, who earned his first victory on Australian soil.

In an effort to continue building his form, Ranger's next start took place in the Peter Young Stakes. The Peter Young Stakes, held at Caulfield on the 25th of February, was a Group 2 weight-for-age race (1800 metres) that offered prize money totaling $200,000.

The Peter Young Stakes saw a bumper field that included race favourite Southern Speed, Lucas Cranach (GER) who placed third in the Melbourne Cup and Manighar who defeated Ranger in the Carolyn Cup.

During the Peter Young Ranger put forth a gallant effort but failed to place, finishing fifth 4 lengths behind winner Lucas Cranach, with the Bart Cummings' trained Illo taking second and Manighar (FR) placing third for an international trifecta.

With a strong effort in the Peter Young, the Grant Williams' trained Ranger's next race will take place in the Blamey Stakes at Flemington.
