Welcome to our Ortensia page
Ortensia, a three time Group 1 place-getter prior to retirement, has returned with a mission to prove the second time’s the charm under new trainer Paul Messara.
Prior to her brief retirement, Ortensia was among the top sprinters in Australia.
Among her notable accomplishments include placing third in the $1million Stradbroke Handicap, and winning the $500,000 Winterbottom Stakes when it was a Group 2 event.
Ortensia also placed third in the 2010 Patinack Farm Classic, behind the dominant Black Caviar, as well as finishing third in the C.F. Orr Stakes.
During her next campaign, Ortensia could muster no better than a seventh place finish in her return to the Galaxy Stakes, followed by tenth place finish in the Goodwood. It was after these events the decision to retire the classy mare was made.
A decision that lasted only a couple months before she was brought back under the watch of new trainer Paul Messara.
In Ortensia’s first up start since retirement, the resilient six year old won the $150,000 G.H. Mumm Stakes. In her next run, a return to the Winterbottom Stakes, she sought to add that elusive Group 1 victory to her form.
The 2011 Winterbottom Stakes, now a Group 1 event, was a 1200 metre sprint that offered $500,000 in prize money. With Black Caviar withdrawn, it paved the way for Ortensia to become the favourite, and she didn't disappoint.
Ridden by red hot jockey Craig Williams, Ortensia won the Winterbottom Stakes by a length, and earned the first Group 1 victory of her career. Much to the delight of her connections, and those that relish a good comeback story.
Ortensia 2012
Ortensia's next start, and first-up race of 2012, took place in Dubai on the 31st of March in the Al Quoz Sprint.
The Al Quoz Sprint, held during Dubai World Cup night, was a 1000 metre straight-race with prize money totaling $1million US.
During the Al Quoz Sprint Ortensia, ridden brilliantly by in form jockey Craig Williams, surged from last to first to win by 1.25 lengths over Sole Power with favourite Joy and Fun another 1/4 length in third. Earning Ortensia $600,000 USD.
As such, Ortensia became the first Aussie to win a Dubai World Cup meet since Elvstroem (Dubai Duty Free) seven years earlier. To view Ortensia's remarkable run see the Al Quoz Sprint Video in the replay at the bottom of this page.
