Welcome to our Mosheen page!
Mosheen captivated the crowd at Flemington during her impressive victory in the Crown Oaks in November.
The Crown Oaks was a 2500 metre Group 1 race for three year old fillies that offered prize money totaling $1million.
The Robert Smerdon trained Mosheen defeated Crown Oaks favourite Dowager Queen who placed second, by an astonishing nine length romp to secure the $600,000 first prize. The victory also represented jockey Danny Nikolic‘s first Group 1 victory since the 2010 Oakleigh Plate.
As impressive as the victory was, the Fastnet Rock three year old is no stranger to success. The following notable achievements, plus several others, can be found in the free Mosheen horse form.
- In April of 2011 Mosheen placed second in the $3.5 million Golden Slipper to Sepoy.
- This past October Mosheen won the $250,000 Manifold Stakes beating Bliss Street and Celebrity Girl.
- The week following placed second in the $500,000 Thousand Guineas behind red hot Atlantic Jewel.
- Made history while winning the $750,000 Australian Guineas in her third-up start in March of 2012.
- Became the first filly to win the $500,000 Randwick Guineas since the event was shortened to 1600 metres.
- Won the Vinery Stud Stakes, her third consecutive Group 1, a streak that's second only to Black Caviar.
Mosheen 2012
Japan’s breeding giant Katsumi Yoshida recently purchased a 50% stake in Mosheen for an undisclosed seven figure price, and her connections are eyeing an ambitious 2012 campaign.
As such, Mosheen started in the 2012 Manfred Stakes where she entered as the favourite ($3.80) and didn’t disappoint. Ridden by Danny Nikolic, she built a comfortable lead and coasted to the line, 1-3/4 lengths ahead of That's the One.
Mosheen's next start came in the Mitt's Vanity, where sent out as the $1.70 favourite she held a lead entering the final 200 metres, but was sensationally caught by Shopaholic ($14) finishing second by a half head.
While the filly’s connections were no doubt disappointed, they felt carrying 3.5kgs more than the rest of the field took its toll, and targeted the Australian Guineas.
Mosheen entered the $750,000 Australian Guineas as the favourite to place, and did one better. Ridden brilliantly by Danny Nikolic, she overcame a wide barrier draw to win going away, with Strike the Stars placing second.
With this victory Mosheen became only the fourth filly in the past twenty-five years to win the event, and the first galloper to win during that same period when jumping from a barrier higher than nine.
Fresh off this impressive performance, Mosheen’s next start took place in the $500,000 Randwick Guineas (1600m) on Saturday the 17th of March.
During the Randwick Guineas second favourite Mosheen ($3.60) stormed down the straight to defeat Said Com ($26) by a neck, with Laser Hawk ($12) placing a tight third and favourite Manawanui finishing fifth.
With this victory she became the first filly in history to win the Australian Guineas-Randwick Guineas double. Setting up a run at third straight Group 1 win in her next contest, the Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday the 7th of April
Mosheen, who was contesting 2000 metres for the first time in her career, entered the favourite ($1.50) and didn't disappoint. Ridden by Danny Nikolic she built a large lead in the straight, and then was eased up to to win by a half-length, with Streama ($2.90) second and Aliyana Tilde ($91) finishing third.
The day after the contest Robert Smerdon indicated the Fastnet Rock filly had rightly earned a spell, and Mosheen's next race would come sometime in the Spring, with the 2012 Cox Plate a likely objective.
Cox Plate 2012
The 2012 Cox Plate, held Saturday the 27th of October at Moonee Valley, will represent the 90th anniversary of the prestigious event.
The Cox Plate, a 2040 metre weight-for-age Group One, offers stayers three years-old and up $3million in prize money.
