Welcome to our Lucas Cranach page!
Lucas Cranach was bred in Germany but appears made for Australia.
Purchased by Australian Bloodstock for the sole purpose of running in the Melbourne Cup, the lightly raced import was assigned to the Freedman stable in September, where he impressed during track work while at Werribee.
A Group Two winner in Germany with good form over 2400 metres, Lucas Cranach‘s first start on Australian soil took place in the Caulfield Cup.
The BMW Caulfield Cup, a 2400 metre Group 1 open handicap event held annually in October, is one of the richest races in Australia offering prize money totaling $2.65million.
Sent out at $16, well behind favourite December Draw (IRE) and place favourite Mighty High (FR), Lucas Cranach delivered an impressive display finishing just three lengths behind surprise winner Southern Speed ($11).
A performance that earned the Mamool stallion a run in the Melbourne Cup, Lucas Cranach's next start, and shortened his win odds from an opening quote of $131 when a relative unknown to $13 going in.
As such, Lucas Cranach became the Freedman’s first Melbourne Cup runner since the legendary Makybe Diva completed her three-peat in 2005. A significant fact in that only the ‘King of Cups’ Bart Cummings (twelve) had won more than fellow Hall of Fame trainer Lee Freedman who owns five.
The prestigious Melbourne Cup, Australia’s richest one-day international event, is a 3200 metre handicap Group 1 race that offers prize money totaling $6.2million held annually at the historic Flemington grounds the first Tuesday in November.
During the Melbourne Cup the Corey Brown ridden Lucas Cranach turned in a remarkable performance for his second start on Australian soil, placing third behind winner Dunaden and place-getter Red Cadeaux, in the closest finish in Melbourne Cup history.
An effort that earned $450,000 in prize money, and a well deserved spell for the remainder of the Spring season.
Lucas Cranach 2012
Lucas Cranach’s first start of this campaign took place in the Peter Young Stakes, formerly known as the St. George, and a key lead-up to other big Autumn races.
The Peter Young Stakes, held on the 25th of February, was an 1800 metre Group 2 weight-for-age race that offered prize money totaling $200,000.
Sent out third in the line ($7.50), Lucas Cranach unleashed a devastating assault to score a 1.5 length victory over the Bart Cumming trained German import Illo ($11) with Manighar (FR) finishing third.
As a result of this strong showing, and his first victory in Australia, Lucas Cranach’s next race was set to take place in the Australian Cup where firmed into favouritism.
2012 Australian Cup
The Australian Cup is a 2000 metre $1million Group 1 event held at Flemington on the Saturday the 10th of March.
Lucas Cranach’s 2012 Australian Cup rivals would've included re-matches with Illo, Manighar, the David Hayes' trained Americain who’s making his first start of the season and Caulfield Cup winner Southern Speed.
However, just two days out, Lucas Cranach was diagnosed with a lower leg injury and will be spelled until the Spring.
Just the same the 2012 Australian Cup has shaped up to be an exciting event, as you can see from the Australian Cup form guide, which has detailed profiles for each galloper in the event.
Punters Paradise is also providing a comparison table of the best Australian Cup odds on offer, the latest field updates, breaking news and more.
