Welcome to our Americain page
Americain won the 2010 Melbourne Cup by defeating favourite So You Think in the historic 150th anniversary of the prestigious event. In 2011 the Dynaformer six year old was seeking to become the first horse since the legendary Makybe Diva to win back to back Cups.
To achieve this mission Americain's next start was on Australian soil, despite suffering a humbling tenth place finish in the 2011 Prix de Rue Kergorlay, the same event he won last year before embarking on his Melbourne Cup assault. Trainer Alain de Royer-Dupre attributed Americain's Prix Kergorlay results to unsuitable track conditions.
Americain's first up 2011 start in Australia was a run in the Moonee Valley Cup. The Moonee Valley Cup was a 2500 metre set-weight with penalties race that offered prize money totaling $250,000 which took place Tatts Cox Plate day.
Americain was the Moonee Valley Cup odds favourite priced in the $3.40 range and didn't disappoint. Once in the clear, Americain stormed home to an impressive 2.5 length victory over place-getter Tullamore.
Last year Americain used a similar race as a warm-up, the 2400 metre Geelong Cup, which he won on his way to a victory in the 2010 Melbourne Cup, leaving Americain unbeaten in his first three starts in Australia.
Trainer Royer-Dupre felt that Americain was rounding into his 2010 Melbourne Cup form, and was confident Americain would put on another good show during Australia's greatest race.
While Americain didn't win the 2011 Melbourne Cup, he more than held his own and proved that the 2010 victory was no fluke. Americain placed fourth in a closely contested event behind Cup winner, and second favourite going in, Dunaden.
Americain remained in Australia to contest the 2011 Zipping Classic, a group 2 event that offered prize money totaling $350,000. The Zipping Classic was a 2400 metre weight-for-age open race held at Sandown on the 12th of November.
Americain, the Zipping Classic favourite, won the event by 3/4's of a length, with jockey Gerald Mosse easing him across the finish for the victory.
Spelled after the Zipping Classic, Americain's next run would come in 2012, with the Australian Cup first-up.
Americain 2012
The 2012 Australian Cup, held at Flemington on the 10th of March, was a 2000 metre Group 1 weight-for-age event that offered $1million in prize money.
Americain's Australian Cup rivals included Melbourne Cup foes Manighar (FR), Illo (GER) and Precedence (NZ). With the scratching of Lucas Cranach just days before, Americain was sent out as the $2.50 favourite.
During the Australian Cup Americain got off to a slow start, and in spite of a strong push, couldn't overcome the early gap. The result was a third place finish less than a length behind winner Manighar ($6.50), who edged place-getter Southern Speed ($8) with a lunge at the line.
The connections for Americain, who are calling Australia home, named David Hayes the Dynaformer stallion's new trainer. Hayes targeted the BMW Stakes, for Americain's next run.
The BMW Stakes (2400m), held at Rosehill the 7th of April, offered prize money totaling $2.25million. The richest weight-for-age event of the Autumn racing season.
Americain, the favourite on entering ($2.50), settled in the middle and then made a strong push at the end. Manighar the favourite to place ($4.20), pushed to the front during the last 400 metres on his way to victory, with Americain second and Drunken Sailor ($26) just behind in third.
Seeking redemption, Americain's next race the Queen Elizabeth Stakes offered up another chance.
The Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m), held the 28th of April, was a Group 1 event that offered $500,000 in prize money.
The Queen Elizabeth Stakes saw Americain face rival Manighar for the third consecutive race, in addition to a star-filled field that included six time Group 1 winner More Joyous, Jimmy Choux and others.
During Queen Elizabeth favourite More Joyous set the pace and never looked back, with Manighar taking second and Secret Admirer placing third. Americain finished sixth.
With his Autumn campaign closed, Americain was spelled until the Spring, where the Melbourne Cup will be the stallion's ultimate target.
