Worst tipsters?

Race callers or those "expert" mugs in the paper.. Every time I like a horse who has been selected by one of these mugs I don't back it LOL

Tipsters in the media are useless. If they had any idea they wouldn't have to work for the media to start with. I don't lay horses on bet fair but I am sure laying their selections would be a good earn as you know their strike rate is poor and their followers will ensure the price is unders.

Having been around for a long time I recognise people with no idea once they open their mouth. For mine Alf Matthews talks with authority but has no idea about Melbourne racing.

in the past I know many punting owners have a hissy fit if their horse is picked by main stream media people so i suppose an extension of that is that they ( the owners) may offer "inducements" to media people not to mention their charge. Probably still happens- particularly with provincial and country grade horses where the price money is not so high.

In addition most of the media people are punting tragics and if they have some reliable mail their money will be on before as few people as possible know about it.

The boys on "Get On" snag a few. Sharky had Nocanoise as his Get On bet last start which was a nice collect of $26

i'd be filthy if Alf Matthews tipped my horse as it was then very little hope of winning.

I've had a few media tipsters bet with me over the years, the give away that they are no good is they have all bet smaller than I thought they would. They obviously know they are no good.

Thankyou boys, It just annoys me as I don't bet on betfair rather TTP and the odds are way to affected by these mugs tips.

I think if you are "too much a fan" of this sport - then by definition you will be a lousy punter. My hard learnt attitude these days is that the money I put into my account for punting is "money gone", just as if I was going to a restaurant. A lot of these media tipsters are "fans", not professional punters. Professional punters (and in this case I am referring to those who are trying to make a dollar for it) limit the number of horses they bet on and dont "have fun" so to speak. As such if they keep it that way - they do manage to make a profit. But "fun" is the name of the game for most.

David Gately knows what he is talking about and has a clear opinion. I like that. He watches the trials in Sydney as I do and I know he is looking for the right things. Mich Sharkie - nice enough guy, we run with similar circles of punting friends. Has no idea when it comes to punting. Ive got no issue with Shane Templeton. He can find a winner. The newspaper 'experts' - yep they are useless. Ive got friends who back horses because so and so tipped it in the herald sun and they wonder why they lose money! Matt Stewart - no idea! Dean Lester doesnt always give out his actual bets. Tips and bets are two different things. Ron Duciffy - no idea. Alf Matthews - no idea. Racetrack Ralphy Horowitz is good. Hilton Donaldson - no good! That bloke on Sky David Bridgeland was a gun from the yard. But he got replaced.

Gator is a champ. He doesn't give you say one tip for the race he will have 3 or 4 which he thinks will run well for whatever reason he thinks. But he is pretty close to the mark with his top 4 picks most races.

Shane Templeton loves backing his $4 shots Each-Way which is always a laugh! I'd go as far to say that all race callers/paper tipsters would have a negative POT, Although I must give credit to Terry Bailey I've known him for awhile and he puts a fair bit of time into assessing races and is usually on the money with this top 4 picks.

I actually rate shane templeton, sure he has some of his horses that he tips every start but hes generally around the mark when he wants to be

everyone should ask themselves how they would go if they had to pick something in every race on the card. I am sure that I would lose at least 15%

Don't follow them, but don't be too hard on them, they do their best

I agree with your comments on tipping in every race hungrywombat. I wouldn't want to tip in every race. However the funniest thing is listening to many of their reasonings though. Novice punters may fall for that rubbish but any regular punter recognises it for what it is. Over the years they have helped me immensely by promoting horses who had clearly run their grand final at their last start.

Yes, I do love it when they talk up something I want to lay

I loved Roy Higgins's mounting yard reports. I could tell you who he would tip by looking at the betting board. His first 3 would be the first 3 in the betting, usually in order of favouritism, unless they were very close int the betting, then he may mix them up and his "one for the multiples" was nearly always the first one at double figures.
One of the best Jockeys we have ever seen, but an average judge in the mounting yard.

Well he is picking the same horses as the majority of other people so he cant be THAT bad

Agree on Alf matthews, Camper...he talks with the authority and self assurance of a Nuremberg judge delivering his verdict but his horses haven't bothered to listen to his solemn pronouncements and can usually be seen looking for an oxygen bottle on the home turn.
Yes...It used to be nightmare in the old days when some media pundit was tipping your horse to a million listeners before you could get out to the track on a Saturday to get on yourself. Now ,at least, you can get on from The Wednesday afternoon straight after acceptances.
Did notice Sam Hyland nab a few winners from the yard at very good odds recently but i'm not sure if it was a lucky run or he has a habit of doing it?
haha...funny you say that, hungry wombat, about higgins...we used to send him up as giving his mounting yard tips while his binoculars were trained on the tote board...if he gave out a bolter we knew the tote board had malfunctioned.

jenny graham picks some good each way odds horses in HK but sometimes she can be way off mark , but hey do your own form, thats what i do, even though theres some good tippers on this site i still dont follow their tips because i know my luck, the day i buy their tips they go south haha !

as I don't do any melbourne form I don't know the precise reasons Alf Matthews has no idea. However when someone gives an assessment for each race at a meeting and every time they turn the page contradicts what they said in the previous race/s to support their selection alarm bells start ringing in my head. Low and behold when I do see a race I had heard him assess nothing pans out.

I have come to the conclusion SKY must get him cheap or he is a terrible nice bloke.

haha..Yeah camper..he probably is presentable and good for t.v... His tips are just poor...guess there's some truth in the old adage that jockeys are bad tipsters.

I think Sam Hyland is good. IMO he tips what he sees in the yard, regardless of form. IMO that is the most important part of 'Looks' tipping. No form, just race conditions! If you do the form before you asses a mounting yard, you will be biased. You have to be impartial.
Anyone who has read my posts knows that I am a massive fan of Mark Shean especially for his spot on racecalls. He is not a bad judge either and doesn't spruik his tips.
I remember when they just brought in the ontrack P.A mounting yard address. Ken Callender in Sydney for memory he did it jointly with Richie Callender. I had rent money on Hotel Grande against Dream Ballad the previous start when he lost by a head. But when Ken tipped it from the yard in the Randwick Guineas I jumped off. It duly saluted at 6-1 and I went home very upset.

Agree GG...i reckon Shean is the best caller at the present though some don't like him. And full credit to Sam hyland for picking them on looks and not on price.Liked your piece with livefortheturf about betting in the run..all the best with it.

If you don't include Saturdays first race, all 5 herald sun tipsters didn't choose a winner HAHA
